Opportunity Overview

The South African Local Government Association (SALGA) is offering a 12-month fixed-term contract opportunity for an Advisor in Planning & IDP. This role is based in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.

The successful candidate will be instrumental in identifying and implementing solutions to municipal challenges related to the Built Environment and Planning. This involves providing crucial advice, support, and capacity-building initiatives to municipalities, helping them navigate Development, Spatial Planning, and Integrated Development Plan (IDP) processes. Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this role, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • An Undergraduate Degree (NQF Level 7) in Development Planning, Town and Regional Planning, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, with at least 1 year at an equivalent level within a medium to large-sized organization.
  • A valid Driver’s License.
  • Ability and willingness to travel as required by the role.

Key Responsibilities

The Advisor: Planning & IDP will be responsible for a range of critical functions, including:

  • Identifying and implementing solutions for municipal challenges within the Built Environment and Planning sector.
  • Providing advice, support, and capacity-building initiatives to municipalities on Development, Spatial Planning, and IDP processes.
  • Collecting, categorising, and tracking relevant information for specific tasks and projects, and supporting benchmarking exercises.
  • Conducting desktop research on issues related to municipal challenges, and assisting in gathering information to build and update municipal profiles.
  • Providing administrative support for knowledge sharing and peer learning sessions, including contributing to content where required.
  • Supporting participation in Development Planning related forums and all IDP processes.
  • Liaising with stakeholders to ensure the credibility of municipal IDPs and representing municipalities on IDP matters.
  • Attending policy conferences and representing municipalities at relevant forums, meetings, and committees within the sector.
  • Supporting senior advisors in developing content for SALGA positions and preparing reports for working groups.
