Opportunity Overview
The Department of Correctional Services is seeking applications for the position of Chairperson. This role is crucial for decision-making processes concerning individual offender cases.
The successful candidate will serve a term of five years, or as otherwise determined by the Minister. This opportunity is available across various regions, including Polokwane, Kimberley, Rooigrond, Allandale, Brandvlei, Breede River, Southern Cape (George), Voorberg, and West Coast. Remuneration for this position is set at monthly rates based on category D sub-category D1 of statutory boards, as defined by National Treasury.
Minimum Requirements
To qualify for the Chairperson role, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- An NQF Level 7 qualification in a Criminal Justice field, Social Sciences, or a related discipline.
- At least 5 years of previous experience in a management or decision-making position.
- Demonstrable experience and the ability to conduct effective evidence-based decision making, which includes weighing facts, analysing and critically evaluating complex information, and identifying key issues within strict deadlines.
- Proven independence of mind and sound judgement, with the capacity to make evidence-based decisions that are accurately documented.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to build respect and rapport through effective communication and influencing, confidently challenge opinions, work collegially, and resolve differences to reach sound decisions.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, enabling sensitive and effective interaction with a wide range of individuals, adapting approach as necessary, and treating others with respect.
- Excellent written skills, specifically the ability to draft well-formed reports that summarise evidence to support decisions or recommendations.
- A track record of high standards of corporate and personal integrity and conduct, including a strong commitment to fairness, equality, and contributing to the wider public or community good.
- High levels of time management, organisational, and administrative skills, coupled with strong personal motivation and a commitment to professional self-development.
- Evidence of experience in any aspect of the criminal justice system and an understanding of the importance of the victim’s perspective.
Key Responsibilities
The Chairperson will be responsible for:
- Analysing and critically evaluating information to identify ongoing risk or dangerousness in an individual offender’s case.
- Accessing and processing information from various sources, including electronic and paper documents, electronic updates, and evidence provided at oral hearings.
- Applying knowledge and sound judgement throughout the decision-making process.
