Opportunity Overview

The Department of Agriculture is inviting applications for a Senior Safety Officer position based at the NARYSEC College in Middelburg, Eastern Cape. This role is crucial for maintaining safety and security standards within the college environment.

The successful candidate will play a key role in conducting risk assessments, implementing safety programs, and managing security operations to ensure a secure and compliant workplace. This position offers an annual salary of R413,001 (Level 08).

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this role, applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Education: A National Diploma in Safety Management (NQF level 6).
• Experience: A minimum of two (2) years' relevant experience in safety management.
• Job-Related Knowledge:
• Knowledge of access control procedures.
• Knowledge of measures for the control and movement of equipment and stores.
• Knowledge of prescribed security procedures (e.g., MIS, NISA, Protection of Information Act) and the authority of security officers under these documents.
• Knowledge of relevant emergency procedures.

Key Responsibilities

The Senior Safety Officer will be responsible for a range of duties, including:

• Managing operations to achieve planned outcomes, conducting frequent safety and security risk assessments, identifying potential hazards, and implementing control measures.
• Proactively preventing hazardous conditions and implementing Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) policies and programs.
• Identifying and recording all security risks and breaches to inform decision-making.
• Identifying and classifying security breaches, maintaining a database of all security breaches, and providing regular reports.
• Providing advice and guidance on safety and security measures, attending to all safety-related inquiries, and advising management about potential security risks.
• Providing awareness campaigns on safety, risks, and security matters.
• Managing the deployment of security personnel on the premises, determining security needs of the college, and developing work schedules and task allocation.
• Ensuring that all entry points are guarded.
• Facilitating the safekeeping and issuance of keys for facilities, attending to lost or stolen key incidents, and overseeing installations and maintenance of new locks.
• Recording and investigating incidents to determine causes of lost keys.
• Responding to routine and emergency calls to lock and unlock offices.
