Opportunity Overview
Dis-Chem Pharmacies is offering valuable Dispensary Support Learnership opportunities for individuals looking to build a career in the pharmaceutical environment. This program is designed to equip learners with a comprehensive understanding of pharmacy operations and dispensing practices.
Successful candidates will be employed in a fixed-term position as Dispensary Support until they are officially registered with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) as learner basic assistants. Upon successful qualification as a basic pharmacist assistant, permanent employment will be considered.
Minimum Requirements
- Education: Grade 12 with Pure Mathematics and either Physical Science or Life Science.
- Academic Achievement: Must have obtained at least an average of 50%.
- Language Skills: Ability to read, write, and speak English and a second language.

Key Responsibilities
- Facilitate the sale of Schedule 1 medicines or scheduled substances.
- Assist in the compounding, manipulation, or preparation of non-sterile medicines or scheduled substances according to approved formulas and Standard Operating Procedures.
- Support with unpacking and merchandising of stock, as well as cleaning of dispensary and OTC shelves.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Dispensary Manager.
- Learn to accurately interpret scripts and adhere to professional conduct and legal requirements of the South African Pharmaceutical Council.
- Ensure accurate picking, packing, labelling, and checking of medication, including awareness of common dosages and drug interactions.
- Verify that all medications are checked for accuracy and signed off by a pharmacist.
- Assist with stock control, including managing cleanliness, packing organisation of shelves, and expiry dates for Schedule 1 to Schedule 5 medicines.
- Follow up with patients regarding script tracking reports and appointments as requested by the dispensary manager.
- Assist with call centre scripts and patient service telephone calls.
- Provide information to individuals to promote health.
- Support scheme authorization processes for chronic, HIV and AIDS, and oncology medication.
- Report low or out-of-stock levels and stock errors to the dispensary manager.
- Receive dispensary stock in accordance with company Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

As a Dispensary Support Learner at Dis-Chem, you will work closely with qualified pharmacists and the Dispensary Manager within a dynamic pharmacy setting. Your daily tasks will involve a mix of direct patient interaction, stock management, and administrative support. You will be responsible for assisting in the preparation and dispensing of medicines, ensuring accuracy and adherence to strict protocols. This includes handling stock, maintaining a clean and organised dispensary, and verifying medication details.
You will also engage with patients, both in person and over the phone, to provide health-related information, assist with script tracking, and support authorisation processes for various medications. This role offers hands-on experience in a fast-paced environment, requiring meticulous attention to detail and strong communication skills while learning to operate within the legal and ethical framework of pharmaceutical practice.
