The Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) is seeking two enthusiastic Bioprocessing Interns to join their team in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. Minimum Requirements

  • Qualification: Minimum of a BSc in Biochemistry, Microbiology, Chemistry, or Bachelor of Applied Science in Biotechnology or Chemistry.
  • Preferred Qualification: BSc Hons or MSc in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, or Chemistry.
  • Work Experience: 0-2 years of experience. This is an entry-level internship position.
  • Location: Ability to work in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assisting with project management activities within the Bioprocessing Platform.
  • Operating and maintaining laboratory equipment under supervision.
  • Collecting, recording, and accurately analysing experimental data.
  • Supporting quality control and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
  • Participating in troubleshooting and process improvement initiatives.
  • Preparing scientific reports and presentations to summarise findings for internal review.
  • Providing basic administrative support for the Bioprocessing Platform.
  • Undertaking general research activities as assigned by a mentor or project custodian.
  • Liaising with internal team members, including research scientists, technicians, clients, and other staff, to assist with project execution and research.
  • Supporting the team in preparing for project meetings or presentations.
  • Assisting in responding to administrative queries from internal stakeholders.
  • Aiding with the accurate capture, filing, and record-keeping of research data and project documentation.
  • Supporting project management activities by tracking project milestones or administrative deliverables.
  • Following all established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for laboratory and administrative tasks.
  • Assisting in preparing documentation for the procurement of laboratory consumables or services.
  • Adhering to all laboratory Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE) systems and procedures.
  • Ensuring all assigned tasks comply with the Platform's quality management system and SOPs.
  • Maintaining confidentiality of all research, project, and platform information.

What the Work Involves

As a Bioprocessing Intern, you will engage in a mix of laboratory work, data management, and administrative support within TIA's Bioprocessing Platform. You will spend time operating and maintaining specialised laboratory equipment, meticulously collecting and analysing experimental data, and preparing detailed scientific reports on your findings.

The role involves actively supporting various research and development projects, working under supervision and alongside research scientists and technicians. You will also contribute to the administrative aspects of project management, assisting with documentation, record-keeping, and ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards. This position offers a hands-on experience in a research and development environment, requiring attention to detail and a proactive approach to learning.
