Opportunity Overview
SARS is offering an opportunity for a skilled and experienced Consultant in Interpretative Tax Policy (VAT). This hybrid position is available across Gauteng, Cape Town, or Durban. The role involves interpreting and applying tax law to contribute to SARS's purpose and service orientation.
The successful candidate will work within a team on projects aimed at reducing the tax gap and supporting government's tax compliance strategy. The position focuses on assisting in formulating official SARS policy and practice regarding the interpretation and application of revenue legislation, and drafting policy documents such as rulings, opinions, and publications.
Minimum Requirements
- Option 1:
- Bachelor's Degree in Commercial, Tax, or Legal, or an Advanced Diploma (NQF 7) in Commercial, Tax, or Legal.
- AND 5-7 years' experience in VAT Consulting, with 2-3 years ideally at a functional specialist / Consultant level.
- Option 2:
- Senior Certificate (NQF 4).
- AND 10 years’ experience in VAT Consultation.
Key Responsibilities
- Accumulate information to review work progress, providing input to reporting, decision-making, and identifying improvement opportunities.
- Administer and interpret legislation, offering expert advice to internal and external stakeholders within specified timelines.
- Apply practical and applied knowledge to identify trends and potential risks.
- Attend to tasks given by management related to the research and/or interpretation of legislation.
- Communicate situational interpretation and judgment of work outputs and queries in the area of specialisation.
- Contribute to the continuous review of legislation by providing input into necessary changes in law or its application.
- Apply policies, practices, standards, procedures, and legislation correctly in the delivery of work outputs.
- Draw on own knowledge and experience to diagnose symptoms, causes, and possible effects in order to solve emerging problems.
- Ensure that all written communication material meets high quality content and accuracy standards.
- Execute specialist input through investigation and identification of opportunities within the product process, including risk concerns.
- Identify deficiencies and loopholes in legislation, proposing the way forward to effectively deal with them.
- Initiate process and procedural change, implement the change, and provide guidelines and support related to new requirements.
- Plan for value-added process improvements, initiatives, and services to deliver on operational strategy and objectives.
- Provide specialist input through the investigation of opportunities for operational and process, product, and risk optimisation.
- Provide specialist support and advice to achieve specified objectives against deadlines and quality standards.
- Implement and provide input into the development of governance, compliance, integrity, and ethics processes within the area of specialisation.
- Develop and maintain productive working relationships with peers and team members.
- Integrate new knowledge and transfer skills attained through formal and informal learning opportunities in the execution of the job.
