Opportunity Overview

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) is seeking a skilled and experienced News Assignment Editor to join its News and Current Affairs division in Bloemfontein, Free State. This role is crucial for delivering high-quality news content to the nation.

As a News Assignment Editor, you will play a central role in managing the newsgathering process, from identifying compelling stories to guiding reporters and ensuring that content meets SABC's editorial standards and deadlines. This is an opportunity for a seasoned professional to contribute significantly to public broadcasting.

Minimum Requirements

  • National Diploma (NQF 6) or Degree in Journalism (NQF 7) or an equivalent qualification.
  • 8 years of editorial and writing experience.
  • Understanding of regulations and legislation impacting broadcasting.
  • Advanced knowledge of News and Current Affairs production and publishing processes.
  • Extensive knowledge of relevant systems and broadcasting operations.
  • Demonstrated strategic thinking, news judgment, and news awareness.
  • Ability to improvise and innovate.
  • Commitment to staying abreast of the latest broadcasting technology.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify and initiate news stories for SABC News, ensuring proper resourcing.
  • Contribute to regional and national news diaries and actively participate in editorial meetings.
  • Monitor the development and progress of stories throughout the day in consultation with journalists and technical staff.
  • Ensure journalists deliver high-quality content and meet set deadlines for SABC News programmes.
  • Provide continuous briefing and debriefing to journalists on editorial content and requirements.
  • Assign journalists effectively based on their strengths and competencies to achieve optimal output.
  • Implement quality control functions for focus, script, and sound in news story production.
  • Ensure the productive deployment of available resources.
  • Adhere strictly to South Africa’s Constitution, broadcasting legislation, ICASA regulations, BCCSA Code of Conduct, and SABC editorial policies.
  • Monitor the implementation and adherence to newsgathering Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
  • Identify and mitigate editorial and operational risks in line with broadcast regulations and editorial policies.
  • Liaise with senior editorial team members, technical support, platform editors, and news management regarding specific needs.
  • Handle content-related enquiries and complaints professionally.
  • Liaise with external stakeholders for newsgathering purposes.
  • Support the successful implementation of SABC’s Performance Management System.
  • Manage available staff, ensuring a fair and balanced distribution of work.
  • Guide team members to achieve the best and most effective on-air presentation and delivery.
  • Fulfil evening shift duties as per newsroom requirements and roster responsibilities.
  • Coordinate the processing of invoices, timely authorization of freelance payments, and proper utilization of resources.
