Opportunity Overview
The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) is inviting applications for an OPERATOR: CONTROL ROOM position within its Security Services division. This role is crucial for ensuring the safety and operational continuity of SABC facilities by monitoring various systems, responding to incidents, and managing communications.
This opportunity requires a vigilant individual to interpret and respond to alarms on all monitoring systems, effectively manage emergency situations, and accurately report faults to maintain a secure and functional environment for the organisation.
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12 Matric.
- 1 year’s experience in a building environment.
- Ability to decipher and understand technical information.
- Skills to set up and adjust settings of equipment according to client’s needs.
- Ability to interpret client needs and log faults correctly and meaningfully.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure the operations center is never left unmanned.
- Receive, record, and log all building-related complaints/concerns via telephone from clients and dispatch responsible artisans/assistants.
- Ensure all faults are logged and contain all relevant information.
- Be familiar with and regularly check the BMS (Building Management System) for abnormal or unsafe conditions.
- Interpret and respond to all alarms on the BMS system and report abnormal or unsafe conditions to relevant stakeholders.
- Monitor all M&E equipment and report any breakdowns or unsatisfactory operating conditions.
- Manage the emergency telephone and dispatch first aiders or fire fighters when necessary.
- Operate fire telephones.
- Program and switch M&E equipment as directed.
- Respond to alarms from lift passengers via lift intercom and take appropriate action.
- Switch systems (e.g., lights and air conditioning) in accordance with directives when requested.
- Be on stand-by to ensure complete continuity of shifts.
- Adhere to OHSA (Occupational Health and Safety Act).
- Communicate with internal and external clients and stakeholders, maintaining a professional interface.
- Deal with complaints or queries from clients, both internal and external.
- Adhere to SABC policies and procedures.
- Keep abreast of the latest technology and ensure compliance with all relevant legislation, including the OHS Act and regulations for building environmental conditions.
- Study and be familiar with manuals of installed systems.
- Keep up-to-date records of timesheets.
- Draw relevant reports from the Plant Maintenance system.
What the Work Involves
Working within the SABC's Security Services division, the Operator: Control Room will be based in a dynamic control room environment. Day-to-day, you will be the central point for monitoring critical building systems and responding swiftly to various situations. This involves continuous oversight of alarm systems and the Building Management System (BMS) to identify and address any abnormal or unsafe conditions.
You will actively manage incoming calls from clients regarding building issues, accurately logging these faults and dispatching the appropriate technical staff or emergency services. The role requires quick thinking in emergencies, such as operating fire telephones or responding to lift alarms, ensuring seamless communication with internal and external stakeholders to resolve issues efficiently. Your efforts will directly contribute to the safety and smooth operation of SABC facilities.
