Opportunity Overview
The South African Revenue Service (SARS) outlines how income tax applies to various employment types in South Africa, including learnerships and internships. This information highlights the general requirement for both permanent and temporary employees to pay income tax if their earnings exceed the set tax threshold.
For learners, interns, and graduate trainees, tax obligations depend on factors such as the monthly stipend amount, whether the stipend exceeds the applicable tax thresholds, and how the employer structures payments. While some learnership stipends may fall below taxable thresholds, larger graduate programmes often include normal Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE) deductions.
Additionally, most employees, whether permanent or temporary, contribute to the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF). UIF contributions are typically 1% deducted from the employee's earnings, with an additional 1% contributed by the employer, providing crucial short-term financial support during unemployment or maternity leave.

What a learnership actually is
A learnership is a structured programme registered with a SETA under the Skills Development Act 97 of 1998. It is not a job with training attached — it is a qualification you earn by doing the work. You sign a three-party agreement between yourself, the employer and the accredited training provider, alongside a fixed-term employment contract that lasts as long as the programme does.
How learnerships work: the week, the qualification and where it leads →Watch out for this
A legitimate learnership never charges you. If anyone asks for a registration, placement or administration fee, it is not a learnership — report it. You can confirm that a programme is registered by contacting the relevant SETA directly.
About FASSET & this sector
