Opportunity Overview

SARS is offering an opportunity for a skilled and experienced Consultant: Interpretative Tax Policy, specialising in VAT. This role is designed for individuals with strong judgement and business acumen who can operate with limited supervision.

The successful candidate will contribute to SARS's core purpose by interpreting and applying tax law. This position is part of a team focusing on projects aimed at reducing the tax gap and supporting the government's tax compliance strategy, assisting in formulating official SARS policy and practice regarding revenue legislation.

Minimum Requirements

Candidates must meet one of the following criteria:

• Option 1:
• Bachelor's Degree in Commercial, Tax, or Legal fields / Advanced Diploma (NQF 7) in Commercial, Tax, or Legal fields.
• 5-7 years' experience in VAT Consulting, with ideally 2-3 years at a functional specialist or consultant level.
• Option 2:
• Senior Certificate (NQF 4).
• 10 years’ experience in VAT Consultation.

Key Responsibilities

The Consultant will perform a range of tasks including:

• Accumulating information to review work progress, supporting reporting, decision-making, and identifying improvement opportunities.
• Administering and interpreting legislation, providing expert advice to internal and external stakeholders.
• Applying practical knowledge to identify trends and potential risks.
• Conducting research and interpreting legislation as directed by management.
• Communicating situational interpretations and judgements on work outputs and queries.
• Contributing to the continuous review of legislation by providing input into necessary changes.
• Ensuring high quality content and accuracy standards for all written communication material.
• Identifying deficiencies in legislation and proposing solutions.
• Initiating and implementing process and procedural changes, providing guidelines and support for new requirements.
• Planning for value-added process improvements, initiatives, and services to meet operational goals.
• Providing specialist input through investigation of opportunities for operational, process, product, and risk optimisation.
• Offering specialist support and advice to achieve objectives within deadlines and quality standards.
• Implementing and providing input into governance, compliance, integrity, and ethics processes.
• Developing and maintaining productive working relationships with peers and team members.
• Integrating and sharing new knowledge and skills attained through learning opportunities.
