The Department of Employment and Labour is offering an exciting opportunity for an Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Inspector based at the Labour Centre in Secunda. Minimum Requirements

• Matriculation/Grade 12/Senior Certificate.
• A three-year recognised qualification in one of the following fields:
• Mechanical Engineering
• Mechatronic Engineering
• Electrical Engineering
• Chemical Engineering
• Chemistry
• Construction
• Occupational Hygiene
• Environmental Health
• Valid Driver’s Licence.
• Knowledge of:
• Departmental policies and procedures
• Occupational Health and Safety Act, as amended, and its 21 Regulations
• South African National Standards (Codes) – incorporated Codes become regulations
• Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act
• Unemployment Insurance Act

Key Responsibilities

• Plan and conduct independent inspections to ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (Act 85 of 1993), its 36 Regulations, and incorporated Standards.
• Confirm registration with the Unemployment Insurance Act and the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act.
• Plan, investigate, and finalise independently reported incidents and complaints related to the OHS Act and relevant regulations, enforcing compliance as necessary.
• Appear in Court as a State witness when required.
• Plan and conduct allocated proactive inspections as per schedule to monitor compliance with labour legislation, including compiling and consolidating reports from these inspections.
• Plan and conduct advocacy campaigns on all labour legislation independently, analyse their impact, and compile consolidated reports.
• Contribute at a higher level to the planning, drafting, and maintenance of regional inspection plans and reports, including executing analysis and compiling consolidated statistical reports on regional and allocated cases.

What the Work Involves

As an OHS Inspector, your daily work will involve a mix of strategic planning and practical field duties. You will be responsible for independently conducting inspections at various workplaces, ensuring they meet the standards set by the Occupational Health and Safety Act and other relevant labour legislation. This involves physically visiting sites, assessing conditions, and identifying areas of non-compliance.

Beyond inspections, you will actively investigate workplace incidents and complaints, gathering information and making informed decisions to ensure regulations are enforced. Your role also extends to proactive engagement, where you will conduct advocacy campaigns to educate and promote awareness of labour laws. You will spend time analysing data, compiling detailed reports, and contributing to regional strategies, working within the framework of the Labour Centre in Secunda.
