This is a permanent employment opportunity for a Head of Office, Level 2, based at the Johannesburg Local Office. The role is designed for a senior legal professional ready to contribute to the organisation's mission.

Minimum Requirements

Candidates interested in this position must meet the following criteria:

  • Possess a legal qualification, specifically an LLB or B. Proc degree.
  • Be admitted as an Attorney or Advocate of the High Court of South Africa.
  • Have at least 12 years of post-qualification legal experience.
  • Have at least 10 years of post-admission experience, of which four (4) years must include court experience.
  • Demonstrate the ability to train Candidate Attorneys.
  • Exhibit excellent leadership and people development skills, with a proven track record in training Candidate Attorneys and newly appointed legal practitioners.
  • Hold experience in budget preparation and management.
  • Possess advanced computer skills, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Display strong communication skills and the ability to manage a diverse workforce.
  • Be capable of planning, organising, coordinating, and presenting information.
  • Have good facilitation skills.
  • Be able to interpret and apply policies.
  • Demonstrate innovative, creative, and analytical thinking skills.
  • Possess excellent problem-solving and motivational skills.
  • Show good leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Be a senior practitioner with a good standing in the legal fraternity and a proven track record in criminal and civil litigation.
  • Be a motivated, self-driven, mature individual and a team player.
  • Female applicants will be given preference in line with the Legal Aid SA Employment Equity Plan.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Maintaining the infrastructure of the office.
  • Selecting Candidate Attorneys, legal practitioners, and administrative staff for the office.
  • Managing the overall functioning and administration of the office.
  • Managing the allocation of cases to private practitioners (Judicare).
  • Training and developing staff within the office.
  • Ensuring sound management of the office’s finances and other assets.
