The Kwazulu Natal Department Of Health is offering exciting vacancies for Medical Registrars across various specialities. These positions are based in various locations throughout KwaZulu-Natal.

This opportunity is designed for qualified Medical Practitioners who have completed their community service and are looking to further their specialisation within a specific medical discipline. Successful candidates will join the Department of Health and contribute to healthcare services while undergoing advanced training.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for these Registrar positions, applicants must meet the following general criteria:

• Hold a tertiary qualification (MBCHB) or equivalent in Medicine.
• Possess a registration certificate for Independent Practice with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Medical Practitioner.
• Have a current Annual Practicing Certificate from the Health Professions Council of South Africa.
• Have twelve (12) months post-Community Service experience as a Medical Officer as at the closing date of this advertisement.
• Hold a valid driver’s license.

In addition to the general requirements, specific experience and qualifications are required depending on the chosen discipline:

• Anaesthesiology and Critical Care: Minimum 12 months full-time experience in Anaesthesia post-Community Service, DA (SA) (or equivalent), and FCA Part 1 examination (or equivalent).
• Cardiothoracic Surgery: FCS Intermediates and minimum 12 months experience in General Surgery post community service.
• Emergency Medicine: Minimum 6 months full-time recent experience in the Discipline and Primary Exams in Emergency Medicine (FCEM Part 1).
• Family Medicine: Minimum 6 months full-time experience in Family Medicine and a Diploma in a relevant discipline.
• Forensic Medicine: Two weeks of prior experience observing and performing Medicolegal Post-mortem examinations at Forensic Pathology Services in South Africa.
• General Surgery: 12 months’ experience in the Discipline (including Emergency Department or other surgical disciplines i.e., ENT, Urology, Orthopaedics), FCS(SA) Primary exam, and ATLS.
• Internal Medicine: Minimum 12 months of experience in Internal Medicine, FCP Part I, and a Diploma in Internal Medicine qualification.
• Neurosurgery: Minimum 6 months’ experience in Discipline and Primary exams.
• Nuclear Medicine: Minimum 6 weeks experience in Nuclear Medicine at a recognized training institution.
• Obstetrics & Gynaecology: Minimum 12 months’ experience in the Discipline at a Regional Hospital or at a hospital with a busy maternity unit (at least 300 deliveries per month) and FCOG Part I.
• Orthopaedic Surgery: Minimum of 36 months of uninterrupted recent service in the discipline of Orthopaedics (neither community service nor ICU/Trauma rotations included) under supervision by a consultant (regional/tertiary), FCS(SA) Primary, FC Orth (SA) intermediates, and ATLS course done.
• Paediatric Surgery: FCS (SA) primary exams, FCS (SA) Intermediate exams, and minimum of 12 months experience in General Surgical discipline, with rotation in Paediatric surgery or evidence of Paediatric surgical experience.
• Paediatrics & Child Health: Minimum 6 months experience in the Discipline in a Regional hospital and FC Paeds Part I or a Diploma in Child Health.
• Plastic Surgery: FCS(SA) intermediate exam and 6 months of experience in the discipline, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
• Psychiatry: Minimum 6 months experience in Discipline and either FC Psych I or a Diploma in Mental Health (or equivalent).
• Urology: 6 months’ experience in the discipline of Urology and FCS Part 1 examination (or equivalent) and ATLS.
