Opportunity Overview

Minimum Requirements
To be considered for this vital role, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Educational Qualification: An appropriate qualification that allows for registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Specialist in Psychiatry.
- Professional Registration: Registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Psychiatry.
- Note: Candidates who are not yet in possession of the stipulated registration may apply. Appointment will be conditional on submitting proof of application for registration with the relevant council and proof of payment of prescribed registration fees upon application or appointment. This applies to health professionals applying for the first time or for a change in registration status.
- Experience:
- Grade 1: No experience required after registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Psychiatry.
- Grade 2: A minimum of 5 years’ appropriate experience as a Medical Specialist after registration with the HPCSA (or a recognised foreign Health Professional Council for foreign-qualified employees) as a Medical Specialist in Psychiatry.
- Grade 3: A minimum of 10 years’ appropriate experience as a Medical Specialist after registration with the HPCSA (or a recognised foreign Health Professional Council for foreign-qualified employees) as a Medical Specialist in Psychiatry.
- Competencies (Knowledge/Skills):
- Strong record of clinical expertise, clinical governance, research, teaching, and training at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
- Excellent managerial, interpersonal, leadership, administrative, communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Appropriate experience in teaching, training, and supervision of students, Registrars, and Medical Staff.
- Ability to communicate effectively (verbal, read, write).
- Inherent Requirements:
- Availability and willingness to participate in after-hours duties, if required.
- A valid Code B/EB driver’s licence.
Key Responsibilities
The successful Medical Specialist (Psychiatry) will be responsible for:
- Providing specialist clinical services to both inpatients and outpatients.
- Performing outreach services within the Rural West ecosystem.
- Managing relevant clinical governance, resource stewardship, and administrative requirements.
- Providing leadership to a multi-disciplinary clinical team.
- Engaging in clinical teaching, training, and research activities.

As a Medical Specialist in Psychiatry, you will be based at Paarl Hospital, focusing on the mental health needs of the community. Your daily work will involve providing direct clinical care to patients, both those admitted to the hospital and those attending outpatient clinics.
