Opportunity Overview
The Knysna Local Municipality invites suitably qualified individuals to apply for its Municipal Finance Management Internship Programme (MFMIP). This programme offers five positions, designed to provide practical experience in Local Government Financial Management.
This initiative, supported by the National Treasury, aims to equip and train young graduates for a career within the Local Government sector. It is a structured professional training and work experience programme, offering high-quality exposure to all aspects of a Municipal Budget and Treasury Office as governed by the Municipal Finance Management Act. The programme builds on existing academic skills, culminating in a qualification in Municipal Finance Management.
Minimum Requirements
To be considered for this internship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Matriculated in the Garden Route District (Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, George, Mossel Bay, Oudtshoorn Hessequa and Kannaland).
- Possess a completed three-year Bachelor’s Degree or an Advanced National Diploma (NQF Level 7), with majors in Accounting, Business, or Finance.
- Internal Audit and/or Risk Management qualifications will be an added advantage.
- Demonstrate reasonable written and verbal communication skills.
- Be computer literate.
- Only female applicants will be considered.
Key Responsibilities
As an intern in the MFMIP, you will be expected to:
- Meet specific learning outcomes outlined in the National Treasury Finance Intern Skills Development Programme.
- Receive primary training in the key areas of the Finance, Internal Audit, and Risk departments.
- Gain exposure to the implementation of the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA), GRAP Standards, Policies, and Procedures.
- Fully participate in all designated training and workplace programmes.
What the Work Involves
This internship offers hands-on experience in financial management within a local government setting. You will be actively involved in the day-to-day operations of the Municipal Budget and Treasury Office, focusing on practical application of financial regulations. The work will primarily involve gaining exposure to various financial processes, internal audit functions, and risk management protocols. You will work alongside experienced professionals within the Finance, Internal Audit, and Risk departments, learning directly from their expertise and contributing to the municipality's financial operations.
