Ensure units meet quality standards agreed upon with Project Managers and NHBRC.
- Civil Works: Perform inspections of road works, storm drains, water & sewer mains, and other services. Ensure compliance with standard specifications, detailed plans, and practices.
- Service Provider Liaison: Identify and proactively resolve issues with relevant contractors and service providers. Coordinate with NHBRC regarding identified non-compliance issues. Effectively resolve non-compliance and quality issues with contractors.
- Administration: Schedule and plan inspections with project managers. Accurately input inspection information and complete comprehensive checklists for each unit. Prepare and maintain accurate records for weekly and monthly reports, draft reports as required, and participate in meetings. Develop and maintain an appropriate filing system for all inspection documentation. Investigate and report on complaints and enquiries, and recommend works for sign-off by the Project Manager.
- Snagging: Establish and monitor deadlines for work completion. Conduct final snagging and de-snagging of units prior to sign-off. Sign off on handover documents once all snags and issues are resolved.
What the Work Involves
As an Assistant Engineer with the HDA, your role will primarily involve a mix of on-site inspections and administrative tasks. You will regularly visit construction sites in Limpopo to perform detailed checks on building progress, from the foundation to the final finishes, ensuring that everything aligns with approved plans and quality standards. This includes verifying structural elements, plumbing, electrical installations, and overall workmanship.
You will also inspect civil works such as roads and storm drains, making sure they comply with engineering specifications. A significant part of your day will involve liaising with contractors, service providers, and the NHBRC to address and resolve any identified issues or non-compliance. Back in the office, you will be responsible for meticulous record-keeping, completing inspection checklists, drafting reports, and managing a filing system. This role requires frequent travel and a hands-on approach to quality management in a dynamic construction environment.

What a fixed-term post involves
A contract post is employment for a defined period or project. The work and the requirements are usually identical to a permanent post at the same level — the difference is the end date. Contract staff generally receive the same salary scale, sometimes with benefits paid as an allowance instead of a fund contribution.

Confirm what happens at the end of the term before you resign from something else. A fixed-term contract ends by expiry, and that is not a dismissal you can contest.
