Opportunity Overview
The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure is inviting young, unemployed South Africans to apply for an entry-level Administrative Clerk position within a workshop environment. This is a valuable opportunity to start your career in government administration, gaining practical experience and contributing to the efficient operation of a vital public service.
This role is based in Pretoria and is designed for individuals eager to provide essential administrative support, ensuring the smooth processing of workshop activities and client interactions. If you have a Grade 12 certificate and are looking for a foundational administrative role, this could be your starting point.
Minimum Requirements
- Possession of a Senior Certificate / Grade 12.
- No previous experience is required for this entry-level position.
- A Degree or Diploma will be considered an advantage.
Key Responsibilities
- Administering job cards: registering, filing, monitoring updates, following up on outstanding items, circulating information, and resolving queries.
- Providing general clerical support services, including assisting with ordering materials, recording data, updating registers, making photocopies, and distributing documents.
- Administering client complaints and queries, maintaining a query register, addressing enquiries, referring issues, following up, and providing feedback to clients.
- Coordinating meetings with stakeholders, confirming availability, arranging logistics, taking minutes, and preparing documents.
- Offering personnel and financial administration support, such as capturing expenditure, checking subsistence and travel claims, and handling telephone accounts and petty cash.
What the Work Involves
As an Administrative Clerk in a workshop setting, your days will involve a variety of support tasks critical to the workshop's functioning. You'll primarily be the backbone of job card management, meticulously registering new cards, tracking their progress, and ensuring all information is current. This means a focus on organisation and attention to detail.
Beyond job cards, you'll provide general office assistance, helping with material orders, managing correspondence, and keeping records updated. A key part of your role will be interacting with clients, handling their queries and complaints efficiently, and ensuring they receive timely feedback. You will also coordinate internal and external meetings, manage logistics, and prepare necessary documentation, contributing to a well-organised and responsive workshop environment.

What an administration clerk actually does
SetaJobs’ guide to clerical and business administration posts in South Africa, written for someone applying for their first one.
Employers screen on computer literacy, written language and the neatness of your record-keeping. Expect a practical exercise: draft a memorandum, capture a set of entries, or sort a batch of documents into a file plan. In the public service the application itself is the first screen — a fully completed, signed Z83 with the documents listed, submitted by the closing date to the exact address given. Incomplete applications are disqualified without being read.

What this kind of post involves
A permanent post is ongoing employment with no end date, carrying full benefits and, in the public service, a defined salary level with annual notch progression. These are advertised competitively and the selection process is considerably more formal than for programme placements.
How permanent posts work: the week, the qualification and where it leads →Watch out for this
The screening is mechanical and happens before anyone reads your CV: the advert’s own application instructions are applied as written, and an incomplete or unsigned form is discarded whatever the rest of the application says.
