Opportunity Overview

The Armaments Corporation Of South Africa (ARMSCOR) invites applications for a Pipe Fitting and Boiler Making Supervisor position based at the Dockyard in Simons Town, Cape Town. ARMSCOR plays a critical role in supporting the South African Navy through various technical services.

This role involves planning, scheduling, and controlling incoming work to meet target dates, as well as allocating, supervising, and accepting work completed by subordinates. The focus is on the fabrication, repair, maintenance, and installation of piping, including the maintenance, repair, and overhauling of heat exchangers on SA Navy vessels. The successful candidate will also provide supervision within the Pipe Fitting and Boiler Making Workshop.

Minimum Requirements

  • Qualifications:
  • National Technical Diploma or National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering
  • Trade Certificate Pipe Fitting or Boilermaking (Red Seal) is an advantage
  • Pipe Fitter Category 5 is an advantage
  • Experience:
  • Minimum 5 years post-qualification technical experience in the pipe fitting or boilermaking field.
  • 2 years supervisory experience.
  • Experience in a marine and military industrial environment is an advantage.
  • Experience in the manufacturing and boat building field is an advantage.
  • Special Requirements & Skills:
  • Ability to gather and analyze information/data to determine problems and propose solutions.
  • Literate in interpreting technical procedures and welding standards.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and welding symbols.
  • Knowledge of various materials, applicable codes, pipe fabrication and repair techniques, and equipment used in the pipe fitting and boilermaking trade.
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Basic knowledge of other supporting trades such as shipwrights, welding, and fitting.
  • Skilled in handling personnel problems professionally.
  • Ability to function as part of a team.
  • Leadership abilities.
  • Great attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Computer literate.

Key Responsibilities

  • Organize workflow and assign tasks to personnel to achieve section objectives.
  • Supervise pipe fabrication, repair, and installation activities, applying knowledge of materials, hot work processes, cutting techniques, welding equipment, and fabrication requirements.
  • Set performance goals, evaluate employee performance, and provide feedback.
  • Discipline staff as required, in accordance with company procedures.
  • Provide specialist advice on ship repair, construction, maintenance, and installation to ensure work meets naval standards.
  • Conduct risk assessments and ensure work complies with the OHS Act and housekeeping requirements.
  • Ensure the effective and efficient utilization of staff.
  • Liaise with the Section Manager on capacity issues and the workshop clerk on administrative duties.
  • Ensure work is completed within estimated time, to applicable standards, with all required documentation.
  • Provide technical input on specific equipment, control items, and items of supply for budgetary or purchasing purposes.
  • Provide technical input for configuration management and control by verifying and proposing technical documentation changes.
  • Undertake specified personnel administrative responsibilities.
