Opportunity Overview

The State Information Technology Agency (SITA) is looking for a Senior Software Developer with expertise in Natural Adabas to join their team in Centurion. This is a crucial role responsible for leading the design, implementation, and maintenance of software solutions that serve the South African Government.

This 60-month fixed-term contractor position offers the opportunity to contribute significantly to government ICT standards and enterprise architecture by enhancing existing systems and developing new features. You will be part of the Applications division, working to ensure robust and efficient software delivery.

Minimum Requirements

• Education: Grade 12 (Matric) or equivalent.
• Preferred Qualification: 3-year National Higher Diploma/Bachelor's degree in ICT (Computer Science, Information Systems, Technology and Engineering) or a related field, OR a Natural/Adabas training certificate.
• Experience: 6 to 7 years of experience with the full software development lifecycle (SDLC). A minimum of 5 years must be actively using Natural Adabas in a development and/or maintenance role within a large corporate or public sector organisation. Experience must include solution analysis, design, development, implementation, system maintenance, management and planning of deliverables, and client communication.
• Technical Competencies:
• Solid understanding of computer science, including algorithms, data structures, operating systems, and databases.
• Knowledge of ICT Governance and Compliance (e.g., Cobit and ITIL).
• Strong ability to design test plans according to software requirements specifications.
• Broad and extensive knowledge of the software development process and its technologies.
• Extensive knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in producing software requirements specifications, models, and designs.
• Strong knowledge of user interfaces.
• Strong knowledge of solution integration strategies and tools.
• Strong knowledge of source control and version control tools like PAC.
• Working knowledge of virtualisation and containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes).
• Working knowledge of DevOps (Continuous Integration, Continuous Delivery, Continuous Testing, Continuous Monitoring, Infrastructure as Code, Config Management).
• Working knowledge of Agile Methodologies (Feature-Driven Development, Test-Driven Development, Scrum, Extreme Programming).
• Extensive background in coding.
• Extensive knowledge of software testing techniques and tools.
• Extensive knowledge of software team leadership.
• Knowledge of IT Quality Management (e.g., ISO9001 and CMMI).
• Knowledge of IT Security and ICT Standards.
• Familiarity with COTS (Commercial Off-the-Shelf) Products and OSS (Open Source Software) Products.
• Knowledge of IT Strategies and Architectures.
• Strong knowledge of data integration tools.
• Execution of Architecture methods and practices (e.g., TOGAF and GWEA).

Key Responsibilities

• Perform software systems coding assignments.
• Supervise the Software development team.
• Provide maintenance and enhancement support for existing systems.
• Implement, debug, document, and release software solutions.
• Lead the design and development of new features for the software systems, and improve existing ones.

What the Work Involves

As a Senior Software Developer at SITA Centurion, you will be deeply involved in the technical aspects of government software solutions. Your daily activities will include writing, testing, and deploying code, specifically leveraging your expertise in Natural Adabas. You will lead a software development team, guiding them through various projects, and ensuring the quality and timely delivery of software.

A significant part of your role will be maintaining and enhancing current systems, troubleshooting issues, and implementing new features as required. You will be responsible for the full lifecycle of software solutions from design to documentation and release. You will report to a Technical Manager within the Applications division, contributing to critical mainframe systems supporting areas like POLFIN, EDUCATION & PAS.
