Opportunity Overview

The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) is an independent statutory body established under the Public Finance Management Act. Its core mandate involves investigating allegations of corruption, malpractice, and maladministration within government departments, municipalities, and State-Owned Entities. The SIU also works to recover financial losses suffered by State institutions.

This opportunity invites an enthusiastic professional to join the SIU's dynamic team, playing a crucial role in the fight against corruption and the recovery of State funds. The successful candidate will be responsible for the effective functioning of the Civil Litigation Section, which handles civil litigation for the SIU and other State institutions under investigation.

  • Qualification: B Honours Degree in Law or equivalent (NQF 8).
  • Admission: Must be admitted as an Attorney or an Advocate.
  • Experience:
  • Six to eight years of relevant experience within a civil litigation environment after admission as an Advocate or Attorney.
  • At least four years of this experience must be at a management level.

Key Responsibilities

The Senior Manager: Civil Litigation will oversee and manage the Civil Litigation Section, with duties including but not limited to:

  • Leading strategic planning for and managing the Civil Litigation Section of the SIU.

Your role will involve strategic oversight, guiding the section's planning and operational activities to ensure effective handling of civil litigation. Day-to-day, this includes managing complex legal cases, providing expert consulting services, and ensuring the financial and human resources of the section are managed efficiently. What a fixed-term post involves

A contract post is employment for a defined period or project. The work and the requirements are usually identical to a permanent post at the same level — the difference is the end date. Contract staff generally receive the same salary scale, sometimes with benefits paid as an allowance instead of a fund contribution.

How the selection usually runs

  • The screening and interview process mirrors a permanent post, and the minimum requirements are applied just as strictly.
  • Contract posts are often filled faster than permanent ones, because the funding is tied to a project timeline.

What you leave with

Directly relevant experience at the level you want, and internal standing when a permanent post at that level is eventually advertised.

Where this leads next

  1. Contract renewal or extension

Continued funding for the project or post.

  2. Permanent appointment at the same level

Competing for the post when it is advertised — contract service does not convert automatically.

  3. A higher level elsewhere

The experience the contract gave you, which is what the next advert is asking for.

A typical route, not a guarantee — progression depends on vacancies, funding and your own performance.

Watch out for this

Confirm what happens at the end of the term before you resign from something else. A fixed-term contract ends by expiry, and that is not a dismissal you can contest.
