Opportunity Overview

The South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) is offering a permanent position for a Provincial Geotechnical Engineer based in Gauteng. This role is crucial for directing, coordinating, and overseeing all assigned design projects across the region.

The successful candidate will provide essential technical input to ensure that appropriate geotechnical design standards are consistently met in line with SANRAL's policies, procedures, and specifications. This position supports the strategic planning, design, and construction of vital road infrastructure in the province.

Minimum Requirements

  • NQF level 8 Qualification: B.Eng. / BSc Civil Engineering.
  • Minimum 10 years’ relevant civil engineering experience post registration.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in geotechnical investigations, pile design, settlement calculations, slope stability assessments, and bearing capacity calculations.
  • Minimum 3 years managerial experience.
  • At least 10 years working experience in the related industry, with specialist experience in Geotechnical Engineering.
  • Must be registered as a Professional Engineer with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).
  • A post-graduate degree (M. Eng / MSc) with a focus on Geotechnical Engineering is an advantage.
  • Prior engineering consulting experience is an advantage.

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct, coordinate, and oversee assigned design projects across the region according to SANRAL policies, procedures, and specifications.
  • Provide technical input on other projects to ensure that appropriate geotechnical design standards are met.
  • Coordinate geotechnical assessments required for route alignment determination during strategic road network planning.
  • Review preliminary geotechnical assessment reports and provide input.
  • Participate in the identification and prioritisation of projects in the region that require geotechnical investigations and design, or are required to address issues with slope stability.
  • Facilitate discussions with other authorities impacted by projects, such as Eskom or Transnet.
  • Prepare and manage the overall budget for assigned projects.
