Opportunity Overview

The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) invites applications for a Corporate Legal Services Specialist. This position is located in Sandton within the Office of the CEO.

The specialist will report to the Head: Governance, Risk and Compliance/Company Secretary. This role offers an opportunity to contribute to a dynamic organisation by providing essential legal administrative support, contract management, and legal advisory services.

Minimum Requirements

  • Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Laws (LLB) Degree or an equivalent relevant qualification.
  • A Postgraduate Degree will be an added advantage.
  • Admission as an Attorney/Advocate of the High Court will be an added advantage.
  • Experience:
  • 3 to 5 years of experience in a similar position.
  • Skills:
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge:
  • Understanding of South African Legislation.

Key Responsibilities

The Corporate Legal Services Specialist will be responsible for a range of tasks, including:

  • Providing legal administrative support, which includes organising meetings and coordinating general office administration.
  • Maintaining a register of all legal documents for safe keeping.
  • Conducting legal research and compiling reports.
  • Receiving, recording, and distributing all correspondence.
  • Preparing and drafting contracts and legal opinions.
  • Receiving contracts, checking details, signing acknowledgement, labelling with unique reference numbers, and securely filing them.
  • Loading approved contracts onto the intranet within 24 hours of receipt.
  • Updating electronic contract summaries and index lists weekly.
  • Coordinating with external service providers for litigation and outsourced legal services.
  • Compiling business cases, requesting quotes, processing requisitions, and managing invoices for external work.
  • Working closely with Supply Chain Management to select suitable suppliers and monitoring their performance.
  • Monitoring the unit's budget in relation to office administration.
  • Filing and verifying accounts from outsourced attorneys and liaising with the finance department to ensure payments.
  • Providing input and support into the drafting and reviewing of contracts, and overseeing contract life cycles.
  • Conducting research on legal issues to provide informed opinions and advising managers on legal issues to ensure compliance.
  • Compiling monthly management reports for the Company Secretary, including reports for all contracts returned to the head office, litigation, and legal opinions.
