Opportunity Overview

Rhodes University, located in Makhanda, Eastern Cape, is seeking dedicated academic professionals to join its School of Languages and Literatures. This opportunity is for a permanent Senior Lecturer or Lecturer position within the Afrikaans and Netherlandic Studies Section.

This role invites suitably qualified candidates who are passionate about contributing to higher education through teaching, research, and academic leadership in the fields of Afrikaans and Dutch literature, linguistics, applied linguistics, or language practice.

Minimum Requirements

For Lecturer:

• A Master’s degree in Afrikaans or Afrikaans and Dutch (Nederlands), specialising in Literature, Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Language Practice or a closely related discipline.
• Preference will be given to candidates who provide evidence of their PhD thesis being under examination.
• Some teaching and/or tutoring experience.
• Ability to teach Afrikaans or Afrikaans and Dutch literature, linguistics, and/or professional communication.
• Experience in teaching or tutoring Afrikaans and/or Dutch would be advantageous.
• Research supervision experience would be an advantage.
• Some evidence and experience in conducting research.
• Evidence of accredited published outputs would be an advantage.
• Some evidence of administration, management, and/or leadership roles (leadership roles may be informal).

For Senior Lecturer:

• A PhD in Afrikaans or Afrikaans and Dutch (Nederlands), specialising in Literature, Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Language Practice or a closely related discipline.
• Considerable teaching experience at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
• Teaching experience in Afrikaans, or Afrikaans and Dutch literature, linguistics, and/or professional communication.
• Experience in teaching Afrikaans and/or Dutch would be advantageous.
• Research supervision experience, demonstrated by the completion of at least a Master's degree.
• Emerging national profile in the discipline.
• A credible publication record in peer-reviewed publications.
• A track record of administration, management, and/or leadership roles (leadership roles may be informal).

Key Responsibilities

• Teach Afrikaans or Afrikaans and Dutch literature, linguistics, and/or professional communication at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels.
• Conduct academic research and publish findings in peer-reviewed publications.
• Supervise student research, particularly at the Master's level.
• Undertake administration, management, and/or leadership roles within the School of Languages and Literatures.

What the Work Involves

Working in the School of Languages and Literatures at Rhodes University in Makhanda, Eastern Cape, you will be part of an academic team focused on the study and teaching of Afrikaans and Netherlandic Studies. Your daily work will involve preparing and delivering lectures and tutorials to students at various academic levels, engaging in your own research projects, and supervising postgraduate students as they develop their theses. You will also contribute to the administrative and leadership functions that support the smooth operation of the academic division.
