Opportunity Overview

The National Credit Regulator (NCR) operates as the primary regulatory body for the South African credit industry, established under the National Credit Act 34 of 2005. Its core mandate involves educating the public, conducting research, developing policy, and registering key industry participants such as credit providers, credit bureaux, and debt counsellors. The NCR also investigates complaints and enforces the Act, with a specific focus on making the credit market more accessible to historically disadvantaged persons, low-income communities, and those in remote areas.

The NCR is looking for a dedicated Internal Auditor to join their team on a 3-year fixed-term contract. This role is crucial in ensuring the integrity and effectiveness of the NCR’s operations by strengthening its governance, risk management, and internal control systems.

Minimum Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Risk Management, Accounting, Internal Auditing, or an equivalent relevant qualification.
  • At least 5 to 7 years of experience in Internal Auditing.
  • Membership with the IIASA (Institute of Internal Auditors South Africa).
  • An Honours degree or Post-graduate diploma will be considered an added advantage.
  • Experience in a regulatory environment is also an added advantage.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in the development of the annual risk-based internal audit plan.
  • Conduct preliminary risk assessments for assigned audits.
  • Develop audit programs and testing procedures.
  • Identify weaknesses in risk management and internal control systems.
  • Analyse business processes to identify risks and control gaps.
  • Recommend practical improvements to strengthen controls.
  • Prepare clear and concise audit reports outlining findings, risks, and recommendations.
  • Discuss findings with management and agree on corrective actions.
  • Track the implementation of management action plans.

What the Work Involves

As an Internal Auditor, you will be actively involved in shaping the NCR's audit strategy by participating in the development of the annual risk-based internal audit plan. Your day-to-day tasks will include conducting initial risk assessments for specific audits and crafting the detailed audit programs and testing procedures required. You will meticulously analyse business processes, looking for weaknesses and gaps in the existing risk management and internal control systems.

A key part of your role involves recommending practical enhancements to strengthen these controls. You will be responsible for preparing comprehensive audit reports that clearly present your findings, identified risks, and proposed recommendations. Furthermore, you will engage directly with management to discuss these findings, secure agreement on necessary corrective actions, and then diligently track the progress of these agreed-upon action plans.

How to Apply

To apply for this Internal Auditor position, please send a detailed Curriculum Vitae (CV) via email.

  • Email Address: hrm-recruitment@ncr.org.za

  • Closing Date: Applications must be submitted by 8 September 2026.

Please note that correspondence will only be entered into with shortlisted candidates. The National Credit Regulator reserves the right not to make an appointment.

What a fixed-term post involves

A contract post is employment for a defined period or project. The work and the requirements are usually identical to a permanent post at the same level — the difference is the end date. Contract staff generally receive the same salary scale, sometimes with benefits paid as an allowance instead of a fund contribution.

How the selection usually runs

  • The screening and interview process mirrors a permanent post, and the minimum requirements are applied just as strictly.
  • Contract posts are often filled faster than permanent ones, because the funding is tied to a project timeline.

What you leave with

Directly relevant experience at the level you want, and internal standing when a permanent post at that level is eventually advertised.

Where this leads next

  1. Contract renewal or extension

Continued funding for the project or post.

  2. Permanent appointment at the same level

Competing for the post when it is advertised — contract service does not convert automatically.

  3. A higher level elsewhere

The experience the contract gave you, which is what the next advert is asking for.

A typical route, not a guarantee — progression depends on vacancies, funding and your own performance.

Watch out for this

Confirm what happens at the end of the term before you resign from something else. A fixed-term contract ends by expiry, and that is not a dismissal you can contest.
