Opportunity Overview

Mangosuthu University Of Technology (MUT) is seeking aspiring academics to join its team through the New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP). This initiative is designed to address staffing and capacity needs within South African universities, offering a unique path for individuals committed to an academic career. MUT aims to be a transforming, equitable, sustainable, and academically excellent University of Technology, offering career-directed educational programmes.

The nGAP programme enables successful candidates to immediately take up a permanent lecturer position and earn a full lecturer salary. Participants will engage in a comprehensive six-year development and induction programme, during which they can study for a master's degree or doctorate, or undertake post-doctoral work with substantially reduced teaching responsibilities. The programme provides mentorship, support for an international mobility experience, and focuses on developing teaching and research abilities. At least 80% of these positions are allocated to black and/or women South African citizens.

Minimum Requirements

  • A Master’s degree in Civil Engineering.
  • Achieved an average of 70% or above in the preceding degree, which must be a minimum of a Master’s degree.
  • Must be forty (40) years or younger.
  • Commitment to the completion of a Doctorate.

Key Responsibilities

  • Teaching and conducting practical sessions for students.
  • Identifying and specifying modern technical lab equipment.
  • Developing lab manuals, course notes, and assessing academic student work at Diploma and higher levels.
  • Developing curriculum to align with 4IR international trends.
  • Providing academic student support, including progress monitoring, identifying "at risk" students timeously, and developing intervention strategies.
  • Enforcing Occupational Health and Safety Act regulations.
  • Engaging in continuous professional development by keeping abreast with the latest developments in the Civil Engineering field.
  • Conducting appropriate research, publishing results, and initiating new research areas within the department.
  • Fostering team spirit and collaborating with colleagues.
  • Contributing to community engagement initiatives, liaising with industry, and facilitating cooperative education initiatives, forming industrial alliances and partnerships.
  • Performing other duties delegated by the Head of Department (HOD).

What you'll need to apply

Municipalities, state-owned companies and public entities each run their own process, mostly on their own application form rather than the Z83 — use a Z83 only where this advert asks for one. Send exactly what it lists.

What this kind of post involves

A permanent post is ongoing employment with no end date, carrying full benefits and, in the public service, a defined salary level with annual notch progression. These are advertised competitively and the selection process is considerably more formal than for programme placements.

Watch out for this

The screening is mechanical and happens before anyone reads your CV: the advert’s own application instructions are applied as written, and an incomplete or unsigned form is discarded whatever the rest of the application says.
