Opportunity Overview

Dis-Chem Pharmacies is offering learnership opportunities for individuals interested in becoming Dispensary Support Learners. This programme is designed to equip learners with a comprehensive understanding of the pharmaceutical environment and dispensing practices, focusing on quality on-the-job learning.

Successful candidates will initially be employed in a fixed-term position as Dispensary Support. Upon successful completion of the basic pharmacist assistant course and registration with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) as a learner basic assistant, permanent employment opportunities will be considered.

Minimum Requirements

• Must have Grade 12 with Pure Mathematics and either Physical Science or Life Science.
• Must have obtained an average of at least 50% in Grade 12.

Key Responsibilities

• Facilitate the sale of Schedule 1 medicines or scheduled substances.
• Assist with the compounding, manipulation, or preparation of non-sterile medicines or scheduled substances according to approved formulas and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
• Help with unpacking and merchandising stock, as well as cleaning the dispensary and OTC shelves.
• Accurately interpret scripts and adhere to legal requirements of the South African Pharmaceutical Council.
• Ensure precise picking, packing, labelling, and checking of medication, understanding common dosages and important drug interactions.
• Verify that all medications are checked and signed off by a pharmacist for accuracy.
• Assist in controlling stock, including maintaining cleanliness, organised packing, and monitoring expiry dates for Schedule 1 to Schedule 5 medicines.
• Follow up with patients regarding script tracking reports and appointments as requested by the dispensary manager.
• Support call centre scripts and handle patient service telephone calls.
• Provide health promotion information to individuals.
• Assist with scheme authorisations for chronic, HIV and AIDS, and oncology medication.
• Report low or out-of-stock levels and stock errors to the dispensary manager.
• Receive dispensary stock in accordance with company SOPs.

What the Work Involves

As a Dispensary Support Learner, you will be actively involved in the day-to-day operations of a pharmacy dispensary. Your role will include direct interaction with patients, handling the sale of Schedule 1 medicines, and accurately processing prescriptions. A significant part of your work will focus on stock management, from unpacking and merchandising new deliveries to organising shelves, monitoring expiry dates, and reporting stock levels to the dispensary manager.

You will learn to assist pharmacists with various tasks such as preparing non-sterile medicines, ensuring correct picking and packing of medication, and verifying all prescriptions are accurately checked and signed by a qualified pharmacist. This hands-on experience will require meticulous attention to detail, adherence to strict legal requirements set by the SAPC, and excellent communication skills as you interact with both patients and colleagues within the fast-paced dispensary environment.
