This five-year performance-based fixed-term contract for a Deputy Registrar: Governance aims to ensure robust governance at MUT. The role involves directing the efficient and effective delivery of governance services, ensuring compliance with the higher education regulatory framework, and managing institutional and statutory committee meetings. The position offers a competitive salary package, including a 13th cheque, housing subsidy, pension, group life, medical aid, and a study grant.

Minimum Requirements

  • An LLB (Bachelor of Laws) degree with practical vocational training (articles).
  • Ten (10) years of relevant management experience in policy development, governance, or legal roles.
  • Five (5) of these years must have been within a higher education (HE) environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of higher education policies and regulations.
  • Knowledge of best practice in corporate governance.
  • A relevant Master’s degree is recommended.
  • Experience in a management role with demonstrable leadership and supervision abilities.
  • Experience in project management.
  • Experience in writing reports for Executive Management, with knowledge and ability to implement legal and administrative policies and procedures.
  • Detailed knowledge of the Higher Education Act and applicable legislation and policies.
  • Experience in policy development and legal affairs within a higher education institution.
  • Experience in liaising across departments within an organization and communicating with external stakeholders, often at a senior level.
  • Computer literacy (MS Office Suite).

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, execute, and manage transformation strategies.
  • Provide advice regarding the university’s governance structures and institutional compliance with policies and legislation.
  • Direct policy development initiatives.
  • Oversee the provision of efficient and accurate administrative secretarial services to statutory committees, including Senate, Council, the Institutional Forum, and Executive Management.
  • Provide legal advice and interpret relevant regulations and legislation.
  • Deliver customer-oriented policy advocacy.
  • Manage resources effectively.
  • Conduct monitoring, evaluation, and reporting activities.
