Opportunity Overview
The Gauteng Tourism Authority (GTA) is seeking a highly experienced and strategic leader to fill the position of Chief Executive Officer (CEO). This is a vital executive role offered on a 3-year, fixed-term employment contract.
The CEO will be instrumental in developing and promoting GTA’s strategic goals, focusing on positioning Gauteng as a world-class, strategically marketed tourist destination. This includes contributing to the tourism sector's development, facilitating industry coordination, fostering sustainable tourism, and ensuring robust corporate governance practices.
Minimum Requirements
- Education: A post-graduate degree, preferably a Master’s degree, in Business Leadership, Tourism, or a related field.
- Experience:
- At least 10 years of strategic management experience.
- Of this, at least 6 years must be at senior management level.
- At least 4 years must be at executive or, preferably, chief executive officer level.
- Skills & Knowledge:
- Proven business skills in negotiation, marketing, people and talent management, business administration, governance, strategic planning, and public relations engagement.
- In-depth understanding of the applicable public sector legislative framework.
- Demonstrated experience in tourism development, business leadership, destination-marketing, financial management, good corporate governance, and positioning businesses within local and international markets.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the planning, development, and execution of GTA’s destination marketing and management strategies.
- Provide overall management and leadership for GTA.
- Promote and market Gauteng as a tourist destination through market research, product marketing, data analytics, business intelligence, communications, advertising, and public relations.
- Build and promote a sustained image of GTA and the Gauteng Province through domestic tourism strategies.
- Lead the adoption of AI and technology to enhance GTA processes, tourism data management, and data-driven decision-making.
- Drive integration and collaboration among tourism supply, demand, and industry stakeholders to support provincial and national tourism strategies.
- Deliver short-, medium-, and long-term plans to achieve strategic objectives.
- Identify key risks and implement mitigation interventions.
- Ensure sound corporate governance and compliance principles.
- Develop strategies to ensure GTA’s financial sustainability, effective financial management, and adequate funding.
- Attract, develop, and retain talent, support senior management, and strengthen GTA’s culture, values, and leadership.
- Position GTA as a key partner in driving economic growth and job creation through tourism infrastructure development and skills training.
What the Work Involves
As CEO, you will be at the helm of a dynamic provincial tourism authority, responsible for setting and executing the strategic vision for Gauteng’s tourism sector. Your daily work will involve high-level leadership, overseeing complex marketing and management strategies, and driving innovation through technology adoption.
You will be expected to engage extensively with various stakeholders, including government bodies, industry partners, and internal teams, to foster collaboration and achieve strategic objectives. This role demands a strong focus on financial management, risk mitigation, and cultivating a high-performing organisational culture, all aimed at enhancing Gauteng's global appeal as a tourist destination.
