Opportunity Overview
The Provincial Government of Gauteng, through its Department of Education, is inviting applications for Examinations Assistants and Quality Assurers. These roles are critical in ensuring the smooth and accurate administration of examinations for 2026.
Successful applicants will play a vital part in the examination process, contributing to the integrity and efficiency of script handling and marking at both district and head offices, as well as directly within marking centres.
Minimum Requirements
- Applicants must possess a Grade 12 / Senior Certificate / National Senior Certificate / National Senior Certificate Vocational.
- Only registered students at tertiary institutions, unemployed persons with one or more tertiary qualification, and unemployed graduates are eligible to apply.
- Advanced numerical skills are required, with Mathematics or Accounting as a compulsory subject.
- Second-year and above tertiary students will be given preference.
- The ability to work effectively under pressure is essential due to the demanding nature and tight deadlines associated with this work.
- Applicants should indicate any previous experience in examinations administration, specifically as an Examination Assistant (either Marking Centre or Office based).
- Please note: Persons writing National Senior Certificate / Senior Certificate and AET Examinations in 2026, individuals who have taken the VSP, and those currently employed elsewhere are not eligible and will not be considered.
Key Responsibilities
For Examinations Assistants (based at Exams District & Head Offices):
- Daily receiving, checking, controlling, scanning, and packing of scripts for marking.
- Indexed archival of scripts after marking.
- Ensuring the correct number of scripts and marksheets per batch, subject, paper, and examination session.
- Addressing discrepancies related to scripts and marksheets.
- Ensuring each bag of scripts includes two copies of the MP Flow control list and is tagged with the correct marking venue colour-coded label.
- Creating a marking centre file for all scripts to be dispatched.
- Assisting with dispatching scripts to marking venues.

- Receiving, controlling, and distributing scripts to marking teams.
- Ensuring the correct number of scripts and marksheets per batch during marking.
- Assisting with controlling, distribution, and scanning of scripts.
- Ensuring all questions are marked, marks are added correctly, and transferred accurately to the front cover of the script.
- Ensuring the total on each script is correct and correctly transferred to the marksheet.
- Addressing discrepancies and ensuring amendments are effected by marking teams on both the script and marksheet.
- Reconciling the number of scripts, controlling, and arranging scripts per subject, paper, numerically for indexed archival after marking.
What the Work Involves
Examinations Assistants primarily work in an office environment within Exams District & Head Offices. Their day-to-day tasks involve meticulous handling of examination scripts: receiving large batches, verifying counts, scanning, packing, and ensuring all documents are correctly prepared for dispatch to marking venues. They also manage the organised archiving of marked scripts for future retrieval. This role requires precision and a systematic approach to document management.
Quality Assurers, on the other hand, operate directly within Marking Centres. They are responsible for overseeing the quality and accuracy of the marking process. This involves distributing scripts to marking teams, verifying that all questions are marked, checking calculations, and ensuring marks are correctly recorded on both the scripts and marksheets. They actively work with marking teams to address and correct any errors or discrepancies, ensuring the integrity of the marking process. Both roles are bound by strict deadlines, demanding a high level of focus and efficiency.

What this kind of post involves
A permanent post is ongoing employment with no end date, carrying full benefits and, in the public service, a defined salary level with annual notch progression. These are advertised competitively and the selection process is considerably more formal than for programme placements.
How the selection usually runs
- Applications are screened against the stated minimum requirements first, mechanically — not meeting one is fatal regardless of the rest of your application.
- Shortlisted candidates are interviewed by a panel, and for many posts a competency assessment or practical exercise follows.
- Verification of qualifications, criminal record and references happens before an offer, and it is a common point of delay.
What you leave with
Ongoing employment with benefits, and in government a position on a salary scale with a defined progression path.
Where this leads next
Notch progression within your level
Satisfactory annual performance assessment.
The next salary level up
Competing for an advertised post at that level — levels are attached to posts, not to people.
Supervisory or management post
Experience at the level below, plus the qualification the higher post specifies.
A typical route, not a guarantee — progression depends on vacancies, funding and your own performance.
Watch out for this
The screening is mechanical and happens before anyone reads your CV: the advert’s own application instructions are applied as written, and an incomplete or unsigned form is discarded whatever the rest of the application says.
