The Provincial Government of Gauteng, through its Department of Education, is inviting applications for Examinations Assistants and Quality Assurers. These roles are critical for ensuring the smooth and accurate administration of examinations.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education: Grade 12 / Senior Certificate / National Senior Certificate / National Senior Certificate Vocational.
  • Applicant Status:
  • Registered students at tertiary institutions.
  • Unemployed persons with one or more tertiary qualification.
  • Unemployed graduates.
  • Skills: Possess advanced numerical skills, with Mathematics or Accounting as a compulsory subject.
  • Advantage: Second-year and above tertiary students will be advantaged.
  • Work Ethic: Must be able to work under pressure due to tight deadlines.
  • Prior Experience (Recommended): Indicate any previous experience in examinations administration as an Examination Assistant (either Marking Centre or Office based).
  • Exclusions: Persons writing National Senior Certificate / Senior Certificate and AET Examinations in 2026, persons who have taken the VSP, and persons employed elsewhere may NOT apply and will not be considered.

Key Responsibilities

Examinations Assistants (Working at Exams District & Head Offices)

  • Daily receive, check, control, scan, and pack scripts for marking, including indexed archival of scripts after marking.
  • Ensure the correct number of scripts and marksheets per batch, subject, paper, and examination session are received, controlled, scanned, and packed for the correct marking venue.
  • Address discrepancies regarding script counts per batch, subject, paper, and examination session.
  • Ensure each bag of scripts includes two copies of the MP Flow control list of contents and is tagged with the correct marking venue colour-coded label.
  • Create a marking centre file of all scripts to be dispatched for each marking venue.
  • Assist with dispatching scripts to the marking venues.
  • Receive, control, and archive marked scripts at Head Office for easy retrieval.

Quality Assurers (Working at Marking Centres)

  • Receive, control, and distribute scripts to marking teams.
  • Ensure the correct number of scripts and marksheets per batch during marking.
  • Assist with controlling, distribution, and scanning of scripts.
  • Ensure all questions are marked, marks are added correctly, and correctly transferred to the front cover of the script.
  • Ensure the total on each script is correct and correctly transferred to the marksheet.
  • Address discrepancies regarding the above with the marking teams and ensure amendments are effected accordingly on both the script and marksheet.
  • Reconcile the number of scripts, control, and arrange scripts per subject, paper, numerically for indexed archival after marking.

What the Work Involves

As an Examinations Assistant, you will primarily work within Exams District & Head Offices. Your day-to-day tasks will involve the meticulous handling of examination scripts, from their initial receipt, scanning, and careful packing for various marking venues, to their final archiving after marking. This role demands strong organisational skills and a keen eye for detail to ensure all materials are accurately processed and accounted for.

As a Quality Assurer, your work will be based at Marking Centres. You will be responsible for upholding the integrity of the marking process by receiving and distributing scripts to marking teams. This involves closely monitoring that all questions are marked correctly, marks are accurately totalled and transferred, and any discrepancies are promptly addressed with the marking teams, ensuring all necessary amendments are made on both scripts and marksheets. You will also prepare marked scripts for final reconciliation and archival.
