Opportunity Overview
Correctional Services is seeking a highly experienced and dedicated professional to lead a Correctional Centre in Johannesburg. This is a critical senior management role involving the comprehensive day-to-day operational management of the centre.
The successful candidate will be instrumental in upholding the Correctional Services Act and implementing key imperatives outlined in the White Paper on Corrections, ensuring the effective functioning and security of the facility.
Minimum Requirements
- An undergraduate qualification (NQF Level 7) in Public Administration or an equivalent field as recognised by SAQA.
- Five years of experience at a middle or senior managerial level.
- A compulsory Certificate for entry into the Senior Management Services (SMS) obtained from the National School of Government (NSG) is required prior to appointment.
- Successful completion of a corrections science learnership or basic training.
- Demonstrated experience and knowledge of both the South African Correctional System and the broader Criminal Justice System.
- Computer literacy.
- A valid driver’s licence.
- Understanding of the dynamics within the Justice Cluster and public service policy, including the Public Service Act, Public Finance Management Act (PFMA), and specifically the Correctional Service Act 111 of 1998 (as amended).
- Experience in the regulatory framework governing public service planning processes.
- Extensive experience in collective bargaining mechanisms and demonstrable experience in efficient human resource management.
- In-depth knowledge and experience of human resources legislation and regulatory frameworks.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage all aspects of the Correctional Centre's daily operations through the implementation of the Correctional Services Act, Act 111 of 1998 (as amended).
- Oversee the implementation of the imperatives of the White Paper on Corrections.
- Manage case management administration, security, development and care, unit management, and case management committees.
- Ensure the correct execution of admissions and releases, secure property storage, and reconciliation of offender cash, fines, and bail payments.
- Manage operational support services within the centre.
- Foster strong working relationships with the Justice Cluster and the local community.
- Monitor, evaluate, and take appropriate action based on risk trend outcomes.
- Manage internal security protocols, including ensuring standby lists are available, maintaining sufficient security, and conducting continuous searches according to registers.
- Manage external security measures, including the utilisation of offenders in work teams and ensuring officials perform guard duty and manning tasks effectively.
