Opportunity Overview

The Department of Correctional Services is seeking a highly skilled and experienced individual to join their team as a Director: Area Commissioner. This senior management position offers an opportunity to lead and manage critical correctional services operations within a specified area, with the Eastern Cape region (East London) being one of the centres for this role.

This role involves overseeing the comprehensive functioning of correctional facilities and community correction programmes, ensuring adherence to policies and promoting the rehabilitation and development of offenders. It is a key leadership position within the South African criminal justice system.

Minimum Requirements

  • An undergraduate qualification (NQF level 7) in Public Administration, Law, Criminology, Criminal Justice, Social Sciences, or an equivalent qualification recognised by SAQA.
  • A certificate for entry into the Senior Management Services (SMS) obtained from the National School of Government (NSG) is compulsory (required prior to appointment).
  • Five years of experience at a middle or senior managerial level.
  • Computer literate.
  • Valid driver’s licence.
  • Required Knowledge includes:
  • Understanding of the South African Criminal Justice System and Correctional Services architecture.
  • Knowledge of public service policy and related legislative frameworks (Public Service Act and regulations, Public Finance Management Act), with an emphasis on the Correctional Services Act 111 of 1998 as amended.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the effective functioning of incarceration and corrections, parole boards, corporate services, development programmes, care services, correctional centres, and community corrections within the management area.
  • Administer security systems and programmes, including comprehensive risk assessments, to ensure safety.
  • Ensure the implementation and adherence to policies and procedures within the management area.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with key stakeholders within the geographical location of the management area.
  • Effectively manage the court appearance of remand detainees.
  • Manage operational risks within the management area.
  • Manage human resources, finance, and assets.
  • Promote social responsibility and the development of all offenders and parolees subject to community corrections.
  • Manage performance information.
