Opportunity Overview
The City of Johannesburg Metro, in partnership with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), is offering exciting short-term contract opportunities. These EPWP Youth Graduate Work Opportunities are within the Environment & Infrastructure Services Department (EISD), specifically focused on Waste Management.
This programme aims to develop young South Africans by providing practical work experience in critical environmental services. Successful candidates will contribute to sustainable waste management initiatives across the City, with contracts running until 31 March 2027.
Minimum Requirements
- Education: A qualification with 360 credits or a Diploma (NQF 6), or a relevant qualification at NQF Level 6 or 7 (Matric plus 3 years of study), in one of the following fields: Environmental Science/Management/Health, Nature Conservation, Occupational Health and Safety, or any closely related discipline.
- Age: Must be between 18 and 35 years of age. People with disabilities are encouraged to apply.
- Citizenship & Residency: Must be a South African Citizen residing in the City of Johannesburg.
- Skills:
- ICT literacy, including MS Office Applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Project Management.
- Knowledge and understanding of environmental issues and relevant legislation.
- Understanding of environmental policies and project principles and approaches.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the process of developing and implementing waste management policies, strategies, and plans.
- Manage the planning and implementation of sustainable waste projects.
- Audit Pikitup Buyback and Garden Sites.
- Monitor service delivery and cleanliness standards, and investigate complaints.
- Promote recycling and waste separation.
- Support community clean-up programmes.
- Educate informal reclaimers on waste management practices.
- Assist with illegal dumping.
What the Work Involves
As a Waste Management Youth Graduate, you will play a crucial role in enhancing the City's environmental health. Your daily work will involve both strategic planning and on-the-ground engagement. You will be instrumental in managing the development and implementation of waste management policies and projects, working towards sustainable solutions for Johannesburg.
You will spend time auditing waste facilities, monitoring cleanliness standards, and actively investigating complaints to ensure compliance. A significant part of your role will involve promoting recycling and waste separation within communities, supporting clean-up initiatives, and educating informal reclaimers. This role combines administrative tasks at the office in Braamfontein with field visits to various sites across the City, ensuring you gain comprehensive experience in integrated waste management.
