Opportunity Overview

The Department of Agriculture in South Africa is seeking a dedicated Resource Conservation Inspector to join its team in De Aar, Northern Cape. This vital role focuses on protecting agricultural resources and the environment by managing migratory pest outbreaks and implementing conservation strategies.

This is an opportunity to contribute directly to the ecological health and agricultural productivity of the Northern Cape. The successful candidate will be involved in critical surveillance, assessment, and control operations, working to mitigate the impact of pests like locusts, blackflies, and quelea birds.

Minimum Requirements

• Grade 12 Certificate.
• National Diploma in Agriculture, Environmental Management, Nature Conservation, or Pest Management (NQF 6).
• A minimum of two (2) years of relevant experience.
• Valid driver’s license.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct surveillance, assessment, activation, and monitoring of locust outbreaks and their control.
• Respond to and verify reported locust outbreaks and conduct ecological risk assessments.
• Organise, plan, inspect, and monitor control units, including post-control evaluation and impact assessment.
• Manage the storage of chemicals in district locust areas.
• Perform surveillance, assessment, execution, and monitoring of blackfly outbreaks.
• Monitor and evaluate blackfly larvae populations, identify control sites (rapids), and administer trials for dosage rates.
• Execute control operations and conduct post-control monitoring and evaluation to determine impact.
• Conduct surveillance, assessment, activation, and monitoring of quelea (bird) outbreaks.
• Respond to and verify quelea outbreak reports, conducting pre-inspection/evaluation and ecological risk assessment.
• Plan, organise, coordinate, and manage quelea control operations, including post-control monitoring and evaluation.
• Conduct training and awareness campaigns, including identifying, planning, and organising training for prospective migratory pest outbreak controllers.
• Manage Migratory Pests Data by capturing outbreak data and mapping affected areas.
