What the work actually involves

Behind a till the job is a loop: greet, scan, take payment, pack, next. What makes it harder than it looks is everything that interrupts the loop — price queries, refunds and exchanges, loyalty cards, age-restricted items, a card machine that declines, and a queue watching you deal with it. Off the till, shop assistants face up shelves, price and rotate stock, mark deliveries and get moved to wherever the floor is thin. At the end of a shift you cash up, and your float has to balance.

Hours, conditions and demands

Retail trades when other people are free, so the roster is evenings, weekends, month-end and the whole festive season, and hours are often part-time or variable rather than a fixed week. You stand for the shift. Payday weekends and December are the pressure points, and they are also when most first jobs in retail are offered. Shortages on your till are investigated — an employer may not simply deduct a loss from your wage without your written agreement and a fair process.

What employers screen for

Employers screen for accuracy with money and for temperament in front of a queue. Expect a short numeracy test, a criminal record check, and questions about how you would handle an angry customer or a suspected shoplifter. Availability is the quiet screen that decides more hires than anything else: applicants who can work Saturdays, Sundays and December get called first.

What you usually need to get in

Grade 11 or 12, a South African ID and sound basic numeracy cover most adverts, and no experience is needed for a first till job. Many large retailers hire through W&RSETA-funded learnerships leading to a wholesale and retail operations qualification — the same work with a recognised certificate attached at the end.

Where this work leads

The floor has a clear ladder and it moves faster than in most sectors: cashier or assistant, then senior cashier or floor supervisor with keys and till overrides, then department and trainee store management. The sideways moves matter as much — receiving, stock control, visual merchandising, the service desk, or a specialist department such as butchery, bakery or pharmacy assistance, each with its own training and its own rate.
