Opportunity Overview

The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness is seeking Medical Specialists (Family Medicine) for the Clanwilliam Hospital within the Cederberg Sub-district, West Coast District. This role is crucial for providing specialist medical services and clinical leadership in both hospital and primary health care settings.

Minimum Requirements

  • Educational Qualification: An appropriate qualification that allows for registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Family Physician.
  • Professional Registration: Current registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Specialist in Family Medicine. Candidates who have applied for registration with the relevant professional council may also be considered for appointment, provided proof of application is submitted.
  • Experience:
  • Grade 1: No experience is required after registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist.
  • Grade 2: A minimum of 5 years of appropriate experience as a Medical Specialist after registration with the HPCSA (or a recognised foreign health professional council for foreign-qualified employees) as a Medical Specialist, Family Physician.
  • Grade 3: A minimum of 10 years of appropriate experience as a Medical Specialist after registration with the HPCSA (or a recognised foreign health professional council for foreign-qualified employees) as a Medical Specialist, Family Physician.
  • Inherent Job Requirements:
  • A valid driver’s license (Code B/EB).
  • Willingness to perform Commuted Overtime duties at the Hospital.
  • Willingness to work at Primary Health Care (PHC) Clinics in the Sub-district.
  • Willingness to do on-site second call overtime.
  • Competencies (Knowledge/Skills):
  • Ability to work within and lead a multi-disciplinary team to deliver services to clients in a Primary Health Care setting and at hospital level.
  • Knowledge of the Community Orientated Primary Care approach and the ability to engage relevant stakeholders in the ecosystem.
  • Good communication, interpersonal, exceptional leadership, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to work in a high-stress environment.
  • Basic computer skills in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following duties:

  • Provide clinical governance and clinical guidance to facility managers at both the Hospital and Clinics.
  • Offer clinical service provision and undertake clinical managerial tasks related to medical and allied health staff.
  • Deliver clinical service at a Specialist level in Family Medicine, including sub-specialties and emergencies.
  • Be involved in the training of students, community service staff, Medical Officers, and Allied Health staff, as well as appropriate research in Family Medicine.
  • Assist the Manager: Medical Services with Human Resources and financial resource management duties.
