Opportunity Overview

Momentum is offering a Finance Internship Programme based in Centurion. This opportunity provides administrative and financial support to the Finance team by assisting with day-to-day accounting activities, reconciliations, financial record keeping, reporting, and compliance processes.

The internship is designed to give participants practical exposure to financial management, accounting principles, statutory compliance, and financial reporting. Interns will develop skills essential for a professional career in finance.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Education:
  • Grade 12 (Matric) with Mathematics. Mathematical Literacy may be considered where applicable.
  • A completed National Diploma, Bachelor's Degree, or Advanced Diploma in one of the following:
  • Accounting
  • Financial Management
  • Finance
  • Cost and Management Accounting
  • BCom Accounting
  • BCom Finance
  • Or an equivalent Finance-related qualification.
  • Citizenship: South African citizen or legally authorised to work in South Africa.
  • Programme Status: Must not be participating in another internship or graduate programme at the time of appointment.
  • Work Arrangement: Willingness to work from the office as required.
  • Skills and Competencies:
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality when handling sensitive financial information.
  • Basic understanding of accounting principles and financial reporting.
  • Basic knowledge of bookkeeping practices.
  • Understanding of debit and credit principles.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
  • Understanding of financial administration processes.
  • Awareness of financial controls and governance principles.
  • Basic understanding of South African tax principles.

Key Responsibilities

The Finance Intern will be involved in various tasks, including:

  • Process Support:
  • Assisting with capturing financial transactions accurately and timeously.
  • Maintaining and reconciling general ledger accounts under supervision.
  • Supporting the preparation and processing of journals.
  • Assisting with bank and balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Administering accounts payable and accounts receivable.
  • Verifying supporting documentation before processing payments.
  • Capturing supplier invoices and ensuring supporting documentation is complete.
  • Maintaining the fixed asset register and supporting asset verification exercises.
  • Performing reconciliations and investigating outstanding or unreconciled items.
  • Preparing and maintaining accurate financial records and filing systems.
  • Scanning, filing, and archiving finance documentation.
  • Assisting with month-end and year-end financial close activities.
  • Supporting the preparation of monthly management reports.
  • Compiling information required for statutory submissions.
  • Providing support during internal and external audits by preparing requested documentation.
  • Performing general finance administration and other assigned duties.
  • Client Interaction:
  • Responding professionally to internal finance queries.
  • Liaising with internal departments regarding financial documentation and outstanding information.
  • Building positive working relationships with suppliers and internal stakeholders.
  • Escalating finance-related queries where appropriate.
  • Delivering quality service within agreed turnaround times.
  • Maintaining confidentiality of financial information at all times.
  • Team and Self-Development:
  • Developing productive working relationships with team members and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrating willingness to learn through coaching, mentoring, and on-the-job training.
  • Participating in team meetings and contributing ideas for improving finance processes.
  • Continuously developing knowledge of accounting principles, financial systems, and applicable legislation.
  • Demonstrating professionalism, accountability, and integrity in all tasks performed.
  • Financial Compliance and Efficiency:
  • Supporting accurate financial record keeping and reporting.
  • Assisting in identifying opportunities to improve administrative efficiency within the finance function.
  • Handling company information and resources responsibly.
  • Ensuring compliance with company policies, financial procedures, and internal controls.
  • Developing an understanding of budgeting, financial reporting, cash management, and financial controls through practical exposure.
