Opportunity Overview

The University of Zululand invites applications for a Lecturer position (Grade 8) within its Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of Anthropology and Development Studies. This is an opportunity for a suitably qualified academic to contribute to a vibrant higher education environment.

The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in both teaching and research. They will be responsible for instructing students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, conducting relevant research, and supporting student research initiatives, while also assisting with departmental administration and community engagement projects.

Minimum Requirements

• Possession of a Master’s degree in Anthropology.
• Minimum of 2 years’ teaching experience at a Higher Education institution.
• Either:
• Competence in communicating knowledge and facilitating teaching and learning in a lecture, seminar, tutorial, and/or practical or laboratory environment.
• Experience in assessment practices.
• Potential to engage in curriculum design and development, and a demonstrated ability to undertake research.
• Or:
• A thorough understanding of fundamental research methodology.
• Competence in facilitating research tutorials/seminars and practical sessions.
• Experience in undertaking research projects, production of research reports, and conducting tutorials and/or practical sessions.
• Ability or potential to supervise research and develop research capacity.
• Demonstrated ability to undertake administrative responsibilities at departmental or institutional levels.
• Ability and willingness to participate in community engagement projects.
• Sound interpersonal skills.
• Competence demonstrating recognition by the academic community for producing sound scholarship in either teaching or research.
• Ability to teach well at different academic levels.
• An interest in and engagement with the theory of teaching and learning, participation in teaching development programmes, and management of academic programmes.
• Ongoing research activity and dissemination of research findings, including a reasonable record of publications in accredited and/or internationally-recognised research journals.
• Service to the University either at departmental or institutional level.
• Academic and/or professional participation at national and/or international level.
• Sound interpersonal skills, including a commitment to collegiality and equal opportunity.
• A qualification in the assessment of learning at NQF Level 7/8, or an equivalent teaching qualification; alternatively, a qualification in postgraduate supervision at NQF Level 7/8, or an equivalent postgraduate supervision qualification.

Key Responsibilities

• Teach at undergraduate and postgraduate levels within the Department of Anthropology and Development Studies.
• Undertake research in the relevant academic field.
• Assist with undergraduate and postgraduate research supervision and guidance.
• Assist with various administrative duties within the department or institution.
• Participate in community work and engagement projects.
• Disseminate research findings, including through publications in accredited journals.
• Contribute to university service at departmental or institutional levels.
• Engage in academic and/or professional participation at national and international levels.

What the Work Involves

As a Lecturer, you will be responsible for delivering engaging instruction through lectures, seminars, tutorials, and practical sessions to students across different academic levels. A significant part of your role will involve conducting your own research, contributing to academic knowledge in Anthropology and Development Studies, and publishing your findings. You will also guide and support undergraduate and postgraduate students with their research projects.

Beyond teaching and research, you will perform administrative tasks essential to the smooth running of the department and engage directly with community projects. You will work within the dynamic environment of a Higher Education institution and report directly to the Head of the Department of Anthropology and Development Studies.
