- At least three years of work experience in an academic digital library or a similar environment.
- Experience with virtual learning environments such as Sakai or Moodle.
- Experience with digital repositories and content management systems.

Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Developing and maintaining special and digital collections, alongside grey literature.

- Developing and preserving special collections, including manuscripts and institutional heritage materials.
- Supporting digitisation initiatives and coordinating the creation and maintenance of digital collections.
- Implementing best practices for digital preservation, metadata standards, and content management.
- Supporting researchers and students in accessing and using special and digital collections.
- Curating exhibitions, both physical and online, to promote collections and enhance visibility.
- Supporting research data management (RDM) practices, including data curation and preservation.
- Contributing to research capacity building programmes.
What the Work Involves
Working within the Research Support Team at the UWC Library, the Special & Digital Collections Librarian will be central to managing and enhancing the University's valuable digital assets. Day-to-day work involves developing and maintaining special collections, digital archives, and grey literature, supporting UWC's ambition to grow its digital collections, which encompass everything from digitised archival materials and cultural heritage artefacts to research data.
This role requires bridging the gap between historical special collections, modern digital technologies, and broader scholarly communication efforts. You will be actively involved in advancing digital research practices, providing essential support to researchers engaged in digital humanities and data-driven projects, and making unique collections more accessible through cutting-edge digital platforms. This includes applying metadata standards, managing content systems, and curating exhibitions to showcase the rich resources available at UWC.

What a bursary actually is
A bursary is funding for study, not employment. It typically covers tuition and may extend to accommodation, books and a living allowance. Many bursaries carry a work-back obligation — a commitment to work for the funder for a period matching the years funded — and most require you to maintain a minimum pass rate to keep it.
What you leave with
A qualification without the debt, and in many cases a guaranteed first job through the work-back arrangement.
Where this leads next
Graduate programme or internship with the funder
Completing the qualification, where a work-back clause applies.
Entry-level professional post
The qualification itself, plus any professional registration your field requires.
A typical route, not a guarantee — progression depends on vacancies, funding and your own performance.
Watch out for this
Read the work-back and repayment terms before accepting. Failing a year or leaving early can convert a bursary into a debt, and the conditions differ sharply between funders.
