Opportunity Overview
Transnet, a leading state-owned company in South Africa, is seeking a dedicated individual to join its team as a Trackmaster in Pietermaritzburg. This permanent position within the Transnet Rail Infrastructure Manager (TRIM) operating division is crucial for ensuring safe and affordable railway operations.
The role involves executing activities and directing resources related to manual track maintenance, with a focus on optimising work groups for the maintenance, rehabilitation, and repairs of track infrastructure within a specific geographical area. The successful candidate will ensure work adheres to prescribed quality and safety standards. Preference will be given to suitably qualified applicants who are members of designated groups, in line with Transnet's Employment Equity Plan and Targets.
Minimum Requirements
To be considered for this opportunity, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Grade 12 with Mathematics and/or Science or an equivalent qualification.
- Track Master Diploma from the School of Rail.
- A minimum of 3 years’ working experience.
- Valid Code C1 (10) driver’s license with a PrDP (Professional Driving Permit) and competence to drive such a vehicle.
- Knowledge of Train Working Rules.
- Knowledge of Code of Practice 29 or the ability to attend and pass the first available course.
- Valid First Aid certificate or the ability to attend the first available course.
- An RRV Certificate will be an advantage.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for a range of tasks, including but not limited to:
- Receiving planned maintenance orders from the track inspector to identify defects or deviations.
- Supervising and executing track maintenance in line with maintenance and operational plans.
- Controlling and issuing detonators, ensuring compliance with the Explosives Act and operational safety.
- Performing various administrative duties of moderate complexity to manage work processes and resources.
- Supervising and conducting performance assessments for all directly assigned personnel.
- Ensuring the day-to-day care and servicing of vehicles and equipment according to company policy.
- Protecting the track during maintenance activities.
- Independently performing physical maintenance of track infrastructure as instructed by the Track Inspector.
- Responding to call-out faults efficiently.
- Ensuring that the correct working tools are available, in good condition, and returned daily.
- Ensuring the safe and timely transportation of the team to the workplace.
- Obtaining occupation from the Train Control Officer before track work to ensure protection standards are set and provide feedback on activities.
