Opportunity Overview
Transnet, through its Rail Infrastructure Manager (TRIM) operating division, is seeking to appoint a Fire Officer. This permanent position is based in Beaufort West and plays a crucial role in safeguarding operations.
The Fire Officer will lead a team responsible for the efficient and effective management of fire and emergency-related operations. Key duties include ensuring emergency preparedness and performing essential administrative tasks to support fire services.
Minimum Requirements
To be considered for this opportunity, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Hold a Hazmat response technician (SAQA/IFSAC) Accreditation.
- OR possess a Higher Certificate in Fire Technology (NQF 5) with a minimum of four (4) years of recognised experience in Fire Services as a firefighter.
- Be in possession of a valid driver’s license (minimum C1) with a valid PrDP, and be capable of driving such a vehicle.
Key Responsibilities
The successful Fire Officer will be responsible for:
- Maintaining operational readiness and responding effectively to incidents.
- Physically deploying staff to work sites as required.
- Issuing and retrieving fire equipment and materials for personnel.
- Proactively and reactively addressing fire and hazardous materials (Hazmat) emergencies to protect life, assets, and the environment.
- Performing general and personnel administration, including managing time documents, leave, sick leave, absence records, compiling maintenance records for fire equipment, documenting fire incidents and hazards, ordering and capturing stock, conducting stock takes and audits, processing goods receipts, managing the asset register, and maintaining vehicle mileage/petrol consumption and service records.
- Conducting various inspection duties, such as those for fire equipment, foam injection systems, hot work, tanker berths, vessels, zonal bund valves, new installations, and the Grain Elevator, in compliance with industrial machinery acts.
- Coordinating planned tasks within the assigned geographic area and regulating the storage, handling, and distribution of Dangerous Goods (Hazardous Materials) in accordance with legislation, providing necessary reports.
- Performing fire prevention inspections of industrial areas, yards, structures, and other buildings or sites to identify potential contraventions of fire safety regulations.
- Conducting fire and incident investigations to determine probable causes.
- Deploying and coordinating fire personnel to ensure optimal utilisation of staff, resources, and equipment, thereby minimising damage and losses to life, Transnet assets, business operations, and the environment.
- Providing continuous supervision and control over subordinates in their daily activities.
- Maintaining and supervising installed fire suppression and protection systems, such as fire monitors.
- Investigating and activating emergency alarms and fire suppression/protection systems in petrochemical berths.
- Representing the terminal during ship/shore liaisons during pumping operations.
- Conducting risk assessments and authorising work to be carried out by private contractors on the berth, including diving operations.
- Providing tug training and training for marine staff on firefighting capabilities, and taking over firefighting operations during emergencies.
- Attending daily and monthly green area meetings.
- Carrying out CO2 and smoke fixed installation tests, servicing, and repairs with contractors.
- Performing any other duties as directed by authorised personnel.
