South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) Postdoctoral Research Fellow Vacancy 2026 | Stipend: R350,000 - R400,000 per annum

Opportunity Overview

The South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) is seeking a motivated and qualified Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join its Environment and Health Research Unit (E&HRU) in Pretoria. This two-year contract position is linked to the CliMMetA research project, which focuses on Climate, Muscle function, and Metabolomics in Africa, with funding from the Medical Research Foundation in the UK.

The successful candidate will be based at the SAMRC in Pretoria and will work with data collected from The Gambia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. Supervision will be provided jointly by co-principal investigators from the SAMRC in South Africa and the University of Bristol in the UK. The role offers an annual remuneration of R350,000 to R400,000, depending on experience.

Minimum Requirements

  • A PhD qualification, or evidence of submission for examination, in epidemiology, public health, biostatistics, data science, medical statistics, or a related relevant field.
  • Demonstrated excellent data analytical skills, with proficiency in STATA or R.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Possession of a Code 8/10 driver’s license.
  • Advantageous: Experience with Geographical Information Systems (GIS).

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with the coordination of study activities and tasks.
  • Process and analyse research data.
  • Write scientific manuscripts and reports.
  • Create research translation outputs, such as policy briefs and media content.
