Opportunity Overview
Rhodes University's Faculty of Law is seeking suitably qualified candidates for a permanent Senior Lecturer or Lecturer position. This opportunity is based in Makhanda, Eastern Cape, and invites academics to contribute to a vibrant higher education environment.
The role encompasses the core responsibilities of an academic, focusing on the dissemination of knowledge through teaching and learning, the creation of knowledge through research, and active community engagement. Successful candidates will also be expected to undertake administrative, management, and leadership duties at various levels within the Faculty and the University.
Minimum Requirements
For Lecturer:
- An LLM degree, preceded by an LLB degree, from a South African university.
- Some teaching experience, which may include tutoring and facilitation.
- Ability and interest to teach in Mercantile Law, encompassing areas such as competition law, company law, commercial law, tax law, banking law, and IP law.
- A track record of administration, management, and/or leadership roles (leadership roles may be informal).
- Some evidence and experience in conducting research is an advantage, which may include research outputs, conference attendance and presentations, supervision of fourth-year LLB research papers, and supervision of LLM students.
- For applicants who have not pursued an academic career trajectory, research supervision is not required.
For Senior Lecturer:
- An LLD/PhD (Law) degree, preceded by an LLM and LLB degree, from a South African university.
- A minimum of 5 years of teaching experience in a university.
- Ability and interest to teach in Mercantile Law, encompassing areas such as competition law, company law, tax law, commercial law, banking law, and IP law.
- Evidence of demonstrable research experience, including research outputs, conference attendance and presentations, and supervision of postgraduate students to completion.
- Teaching experience at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels is required.
- Research supervision at the Master's level is required.
- For applicants who have not pursued an academic career trajectory, information and evidence must be provided of:
- A good professional track record.
- A strong track record of training and mentoring junior staff.
- Supervision of junior staff, including candidate attorneys.
- An emerging national profile in the discipline.
- Demonstrated research supervision ability, for example, as a research project editor and research coordinator of relevant legal research.
Key Responsibilities
- Disseminate knowledge through teaching and learning activities.
- Create new knowledge through research.
- Engage with the community.
- Assume administrative, management, and/or leadership duties at departmental, Faculty, and/or University levels.
- Provide academic leadership in teaching and learning, research, and community engagement.
- Contribute towards the governance of the institution, with this contribution evidenced at the departmental, Faculty, and institutional levels.
