Opportunity Overview

The Public Protector SA plays a vital role in upholding good governance and accountability within South Africa. This organisation is mandated to investigate allegations of maladministration, abuse of power, improper conduct, and undue delays by individuals performing public functions.

An exciting opportunity exists for a dedicated Investigator to join the team in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga. This role is central to the Public Protector’s mission, focusing on conducting thorough investigations into complaints related to state organs and parastatals.

Minimum Requirements

• Degree or National Diploma in Law, Auditing, Forensic Accounting, or Forensic Investigations.
• Minimum of three (3) years' experience in investigations, forensic investigations, and/or forensic auditing.
• A valid South African driver’s license.
• Fluency in English and at least one other official language relevant to Mpumalanga.
• Good understanding of the legislative prescripts that give mandate to the Public Protector SA.
• Computer literacy.
• Understanding of Public Service Administration.
• Knowledge and application of Case Management Systems (CMS) or other computerised management systems.
• Knowledge of auditing or investigation techniques.
• Knowledge of Good Governance principles.
• Skills in negotiation, mediation, and conciliation (Alternative Dispute Resolution).
• Ability to conduct legal research and interpret statutes.
• Strong report writing skills.
• Ability to initiate hearings, gather information, and collect evidence.
• The position requires individuals who are objective, impartial, and demonstrate initiative.
• Ability to deal with complaints, resolve issues, rectify maladministration, make presentations, and act without fear, favour, or prejudice.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct investigations into maladministration, undue delays, and conduct failures using various investigation techniques in accordance with PPSA service standards.
• Prepare comprehensive Investigation Plans for each allocated matter.
• Apply Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) processes to resolve reported complaints.
• Keep complainants informed of the progress of their investigations.
• Prepare letters, memos, and draft investigation and closing reports for submission to supervisors within set timelines.
• Submit accurate and complete monthly and quarterly statistical reports to the supervisor.
• Ensure the case management system is consistently updated for accurate reporting.
• Adhere strictly to the Public Protector SA Service Standards.

What the Work Involves

As an Investigator based in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga, you will be at the forefront of ensuring accountability in public service. Your work will involve meticulously investigating complaints and allegations of maladministration, abuse of power, and improper conduct within state organs and parastatals.

Day-to-day responsibilities include developing investigation plans, gathering evidence, conducting interviews, and applying various investigative and auditing techniques. You will be responsible for applying Alternative Dispute Resolution processes to resolve complaints and for preparing detailed reports and correspondence. Maintaining accurate records on the case management system and regularly updating complainants on the progress of their cases are also critical aspects of the role. You will report directly to a Senior Investigator, contributing significantly to the Public Protector’s efforts to correct service delivery failures and uphold public trust.
