Opportunity Overview

The Public Investment Corporation (PIC) is a prominent asset management firm responsible for making investments on behalf of public sector entities, including the Government Employees Pension Fund, the Unemployment Insurance Fund, and the Compensation Fund. The PIC has grown to be one of the largest investment managers in South Africa and across the African continent, managing assets worth over R3 trillion.

The PIC is currently seeking applications for the position of Advisor to the Board Chairperson. This vital role provides independent, professional, and analytical support to the Chairperson in fulfilling their leadership, governance, and oversight responsibilities. It is a strictly advisory capacity, not involving executive, management, or decision-making authority. This appointment is linked to the term of office of the incumbent Chairperson of the PIC Board and is based in Pretoria.

Minimum Requirements

Candidates interested in this opportunity must meet the following criteria:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Law, Public Administration, Economics, Finance, Governance, or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of 5-8 years of relevant working experience.
  • A sound understanding of corporate governance principles, fiduciary responsibilities, board effectiveness, and oversight practices.

Key Responsibilities

The Advisor to the Board Chairperson will be responsible for:

  • Reviewing Board agendas, papers, and supporting documentation.
  • Preparing concise and confidential briefings for the Chairperson on matters requiring their attention.
  • Supporting the Chairperson in strategic stakeholder engagements.
  • Providing independent analytical support to strengthen the Chairperson's oversight responsibilities.
  • Supporting the Chairperson in preparing for Board and other significant governance meetings.
  • Analysing strategic, investment, financial, governance, risk, audit, and organisational performance reports.
  • Identifying significant risks, information gaps, inconsistencies, and matters requiring clarification.
  • Highlighting issues requiring additional evidence or management input.
  • Identifying strategic questions and discussion points to support effective Board deliberations and decision-making.

What the Work Involves

This role involves preparing the Board Chairperson for critical Board and governance meetings by thoroughly reviewing comprehensive documents, crafting concise summaries, and identifying key discussion points. It means meticulously analysing complex reports covering strategy, investment, finance, governance, risk, audit, and organisational performance. The Advisor will be tasked with flagging potential risks, information gaps, inconsistencies, and issues that require further clarification or management input. Furthermore, the role involves supporting high-level stakeholder engagements and providing analytical backing for the Chairperson's overarching oversight functions. The work is carried out within the Public Investment Corporation's offices in Pretoria, directly supporting the Board Chairperson in a strictly advisory capacity.

What a fixed-term post involves

A contract post is employment for a defined period or project. The work and the requirements are usually identical to a permanent post at the same level — the difference is the end date. Contract staff generally receive the same salary scale, sometimes with benefits paid as an allowance instead of a fund contribution.

Watch out for this

Confirm what happens at the end of the term before you resign from something else. A fixed-term contract ends by expiry, and that is not a dismissal you can contest.
