The Office of the Pension Funds Adjudicator (OPFA) is an independent statutory body established under the Pension Funds Act, 24 of 1956. Its core mandate is to resolve complaints relating to pension funds in a fair, efficient, and cost-effective manner.

The OPFA is seeking a dedicated Senior Assistant Adjudicator to take on a leadership role as a Team Leader within its Case Management team in Pretoria. This permanent position offers an opportunity to guide a team of professionals, ensuring high service delivery in the administration and adjudication of pension fund complaints, while also contributing to the organisation's management team.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this opportunity, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • A Bachelor of Laws Degree (LLB).
  • 7 years of relevant experience, with at least 5 years in a middle to senior managerial role within a legal environment. Experience at a regulatory body, ombudsman, or pension funds administrator is preferred.
  • Demonstrable experience in people management, including the ability to lead, motivate, and manage a team to achieve results.
  • Strong administrative skills, with the ability to draft comprehensive reports and work effectively under deadlines.
  • Proficiency in computer literacy.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to think independently and critically, offering well-reasoned solutions.
  • Possess a high level of judgment, confidence, and a decisive approach.
  • Commitment to taking initiative in personal development.
  • Capability to perform effectively in a high-pressure environment.
  • An energetic self-starter with a proactive approach to work.
  • Ability to work with a case administration system and manage high volumes of complaints.
  • Proficiency in reviewing draft determinations.
  • Ability to assess facts, interpret legislation, and provide clear guidance to team members.
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of the Pension Funds Act and the role of the Pension Funds Adjudicator.
  • Admission as an Attorney or Advocate is an added advantage.
  • Experience in the financial services sector is an added advantage.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for a range of critical functions, including:

  • Assessing and allocating incoming complaints.
  • Analysing submissions and directing further investigations as required.
  • Conducting quality control on draft determinations before submission for approval.
  • Ensuring all complaints are administered in line with approved processes and accurately recorded on the case management system.
  • Signing of court filing sheets.
  • Managing a team of legal professionals, which includes planning activities, monitoring performance, providing guidance, allocating tasks, and maintaining statistical records.
  • Identifying, reporting, and mitigating organisational risks, as well as reviewing existing risk mitigating actions within the area of responsibility.
  • Ensuring adherence to all deadlines and turnaround times.
  • Providing substantial input into the strategic planning processes of the organisation.
  • Upholding organisational values in all aspects of work.
  • Undertaking ad hoc projects and tasks as assigned.
  • Preparing weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual reports when necessary.
  • Actively participating as a member of the OPFA Management Committee (ManCo) and other relevant committees.
  • Engaging actively with stakeholders on matters of mutual interest.
  • Involvement in talent management initiatives.

As a Senior Assistant Adjudicator and Team Leader in Pretoria, you will play a central role in the OPFA's mission to resolve pension fund complaints. Day-to-day, your work will involve overseeing the assessment and allocation of complaints, guiding your team through the investigation process, and ensuring the quality and accuracy of all draft determinations. You will be responsible for managing a team of legal professionals, providing them with direction, support, and oversight, while maintaining comprehensive records of their activities.
