Opportunity Overview

The National Metrology Institute Of South Africa (NMISA) is a Type 3A Public Entity, established under the Measurement Unit and Measurement Standards Act, No. 18 of 2006. NMISA is mandated to ensure the use of the international system of units (the SI) in South Africa, maintain national measurement standards, and ensure the comparability of these standards.

This 24-month Internship offers practical training within the Risk Management unit, situated in the Governance, Risk and Compliance Section of the Strategy, Business Development and Governance Division. The successful candidate will work closely with the Risk Management Officer to gain hands-on experience in the field.

Minimum Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree (NQF Level 7) in Risk Management, Auditing, Management, or a related field.
• Knowledge and understanding of Governance and Risk Principles.
• Basic understanding of MS Office Software.
• Good communication and report writing skills.
• No prior internship or relevant work experience is required for this position; applicants with prior work experience will not be considered.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist with assessing and managing risks related to NMISA and its context, including cultural, social, political, legal, regulatory, financial, technological, economic, and competitive circumstances.
• Assist with performing a risk assessment of the Strategy Plan for the period under review, considering the impact of systematic changes such as international trends in Metrology, national, and provincial policy and legislative developments.
• Assist with evaluating the effectiveness of risk mitigation plans implemented by Managers and Project Leaders of technical/scientific projects on a quarterly basis.
• Assist with maintaining the NMISA Risk Registers.
• Assist with overseeing the overall risk management process for NMISA.
• Assist with continuously monitoring, reviewing, and updating the fraud prevention and ethics management policies and processes.
• Assist with managing and coordinating the organisational Business Continuity Management Plans.
• Assist with ensuring that staff is familiar with ethics related policies and procedures, including declaration of private interest, receipt of gifts, and whistle blowing processes.

What the Work Involves

This internship provides an opportunity for hands-on learning within NMISA's Risk Management unit, working directly with a dedicated Risk Management Officer. Day-to-day responsibilities will involve supporting vigorous risk management and governance across all NMISA operations.

The work will entail helping to identify and analyse various material risks, applying standard methodologies for their management, and contributing to the development of an accurate risk and opportunity management profile for the Institute. The position is based in an office environment, within the Governance, Risk and Compliance Section, supporting the broader Strategy, Business Development and Governance Division.
