Mintek Postdoctoral Research Fellow: Chemical Engineering Vacancy 2026
Opportunity Overview
Mintek, a leader in scientific research and development, is offering a Postdoctoral Research Fellow opportunity in Chemical Engineering. This fixed-term contract position is based in Randburg.
The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team, conducting research focused on chemical and biological percolation leaching. This work contributes to the development and optimisation of innovative metallurgical processes, particularly for treating low-grade ores and mine wastes. The role involves undertaking experimental and theoretical studies to deepen process understanding, support the creation of predictive models, and advance technology development and scale-up efforts.
Minimum Requirements
- A Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, supported by a BSc(Eng) or BEng undergraduate degree (final thesis corrections are accepted).
- Demonstrated experience in hydrometallurgy.
- Sound understanding of fluid flow, mass transfer, and reaction kinetics in heterogeneous systems.
- Experience in percolation leaching (heap or VAT leaching) or biometallurgy is an advantage.
- Experience in process modelling, machine learning, or data-driven modelling is an advantage.
- A publication record in peer-reviewed journals is beneficial.
- The role requires a team player with a passion for research and technology development, excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to work in a demanding environment. Applicants must be willing to travel locally and internationally.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct experimental and theoretical research on percolation leaching processes, including hydrodynamics, mass transfer, and reaction kinetics.
- Design, execute, and interpret laboratory-scale test work to enhance process understanding and support technology development.
- Contribute innovative ideas and methodologies to advance percolation leaching and biometallurgical processes.
- Analyse experimental data and contribute to process modelling, prediction, and optimisation of leaching performance.
- Prepare research proposals and contribute to scientific publications, conference presentations, and intellectual property development.
- Mentor junior researchers and contribute to collaborative research programmes.
- Plan and manage research activities in compliance with SHEQ requirements.
