Opportunity Overview
The Midvaal Local Municipality is inviting applications for the position of Lifeguard within its Swimming Pool services. This is a crucial role focused on ensuring the safety and enjoyment of residents using the municipal swimming facilities.
This opportunity is specifically available for residents of the Sedibeng Region only. Successful candidates will be appointed for a contract period from 01 October 2026 to 30 September 2027.
Minimum Requirements
To be considered for this position, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Grade 10 qualification.
- A valid Lifeguard Certificate.
- A Level 1 First Aid Certificate.
- Demonstrated strong swimming skills.
- Ability to remain calm and act quickly in emergency situations.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and office management skills.
- Solid knowledge of swimming pool rules and regulations.
- At least 1 year of relevant experience as a lifeguard.
- Must be a resident of the Sedibeng Region.
- A valid Driver’s license will be considered an added advantage.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for a range of duties, including:
- Opening and closing the swimming pool daily according to scheduled hours.
- Regularly treating the pool with appropriate chemicals and operating the swimming pool system.
- Closely monitoring activities in the pool area to identify and address any safety issues throughout shifts.
- Directing swimmers out of the water during dangerous conditions.
- Monitoring weather reports to ensure guest safety.
- Organizing and overseeing various pool activities.
- Providing learn-to-swim lessons and coaching when applicable.
- Maintaining a clean pool environment, including checking and adjusting pH and chlorine levels.
- Checking guests in and out, enforcing pool ability rules, and rotating between lifeguard chairs to watch over swimmers and perform rescues if necessary.
- During the off-season, performing sport and recreation activities and other related ad-hoc tasks as requested by management.
What the Work Involves
As a Lifeguard, you will spend your days actively managing the municipal swimming pool environment in Meyerton. Your primary focus will be on the safety of all swimmers and visitors, which involves constant vigilance, enforcing rules, and being ready to act swiftly in emergencies. You'll be involved in the daily operational tasks of the pool, from opening and closing procedures to maintaining water quality through chemical treatments and system operation.
The role also involves interacting with the public, assisting guests, and potentially leading swimming lessons or coaching. You will work closely with other staff, reporting to a supervisor, and ensuring the pool area remains hygienic and well-organised. During the off-season, your duties will broaden to include other sport and recreation activities, ensuring continuous engagement within the municipality's leisure services.
