Opportunity Overview

The Human Science Research Council (HSRC) invites applications for a Senior Research Specialist to join its dynamic Public Health, Societies and Belonging (PHSB) research division. This is a permanent, hybrid-work position based in one of the HSRC offices in Pretoria, Cape Town, or Pietermaritzburg.

The PHSB division comprises a multi-disciplinary team of social scientists and public health specialists dedicated to conducting extensive empirical and policy-related studies. Their work focuses on transdisciplinary, intersectional research aimed at improving health, well-being, and fostering a socially just and cohesive society in South Africa.

This opportunity is for one experienced individual to contribute significantly to the division's mission through high-level research, programme management, and the mentorship of emerging researchers.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this role, applicants must meet the following criteria:

• A Doctorate (NQF level 10) in Social Sciences, Public Health, Epidemiology, or Biostatistics.
• An established research career demonstrated by at least seven (7) peer-reviewed publications in accredited academic journals, with some being first or sole-authored.
• A minimum of six (6) years of research and management experience, preferably gained within a research institution or university setting.
• Proven experience in managing and coordinating research programmes.
• A sound grounding in research methods, with a particular emphasis on quantitative approaches.
• Demonstrated strength in epidemiological research methods and design.
• Sound knowledge of and experience in quantitative data management and data analysis skills.
• Proficiency in or working experience with statistical software packages such as STATA, R, SPSS, or SAS.
• Excellent networking and fundraising track record.
• Good communication and leadership skills.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Key Responsibilities

The Senior Research Specialist will undertake a range of duties, including:

• Leading and conducting high-level scholarly research using both quantitative and qualitative methodologies.
• Participating in all aspects of the research process, from conceptualisation to dissemination.
• Responding to calls for proposals and formulating successful grant applications.
• Delivering high-quality research results and reports within specified budgets and deadlines.
• Communicating research findings effectively at national and international conferences.
• Publishing papers in refereed journals, as well as producing policy briefs and technical reports.
• Providing epidemiological and biostatistical expertise to various projects.
• Networking with major users and funders of Public Health research to understand their needs.
• Building and maintaining national and international research links.
• Mentoring young researchers within the division.
• Contributing to the sustainable growth of the PHSB research programme.

What the Work Involves

As a Senior Research Specialist, you will be at the forefront of public health research, working on critical studies that inform policy and improve societal well-being. This role involves initiating and managing research projects from start to finish, requiring advanced skills in both quantitative and qualitative methods. You will regularly engage in data collection, complex analysis using statistical software, and rigorous academic writing for publications.

You will collaborate with a diverse team of social scientists and public health specialists, often leading projects and guiding junior researchers. The position requires strong engagement with external stakeholders, including funders and users of public health research, to identify needs and secure resources. The work environment is hybrid, allowing for a balance between working from one of the HSRC offices in Pretoria, Cape Town, or Pietermaritzburg, and remote work.
